I like the following:

AdAware - http://www.lavasoft.com/

SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

ZoneAlarm AntiSpyware - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata...d=dbtopnav_zass

PestPatrol - http://pestpatrol.com/

I use all of them on my systems, in case 1 misses something one of the others is sure to find it.

FireFox (browser) is your swiss army knife in AutoSurfing.

I'll second AdAware as being great - use it all the time and recommend it to anyone doing autosurfing (or even just general web surfing really).

There doesn't seem to be any only "one" program that finds all spyware.

You've already been given good suggestions. Some of those reommendations are also found in the list of what I use:

----------- Online Free Virus and Trojan and Worm Finder ----------------
Many spyware type of files can slow down your computer to a crawl...
There are good online free services to detect Trojans and Worms
Note: If they do not seem to load up... you will have to change settings in IE...
The easiest way is: If your Browser is IE... In IE-select Tools-Options-
Select Security and add this addresses to the "Trusted Sites" list.

Trend Micro HouseCall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/

Download, then install all of the following Free Programs to your computer:
===============================================

1. AVG Antivirus
AVG Anti-virus software is essential for any Internet activity. AVG is one of the best free programs. Download, Install and then Set up AVG for automatic updates at 1 day intervals for Free. Also set it to automatically scan your hard drive during the time most convenuient for you.
AVG Anti-Virus http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5
Scroll down to
AVG Free for Windows installation files
File Version
avg71free_371a669.exe 7.1.371

2. Firewall SyGate
(Opinion: Better than ZoneAlarm but symantec recently (Oct 2005) bought out SyGate thus may not support it in future)
http://www.simtel.com/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687

3. AdAware
Download, install, update and run daily.Usually finds about 35 '"Critical" spyware type of programs for you to "Quaranteen". Update recommended at least 1x per week.
http://www.lavasoft.com/

4, SpyBot Search & Destroy
Download, install, update and run daily. Unlessyouusethe"Inoculate"feature. Spybot usually finds about 1 to 20 spyware type of programs for you to "Delete". Update/Inoculate recommended at least 1x per week.
http://spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?lang=en&page=start

5. SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it helps/tries to prevent most of it from ever being installed.
Download, install:
http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

6. SpyWareGuard
SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
Download, install, update and Update recommended at least 1x per month.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3045.html

7. XBlock
Here is one more anti-spyware program in addition to suppliment what has already been suggested...a very handy Freeware program:

XBlock often finds malware/spyware that "adaware" and "spybot" do not detect.

This freeware version of "xBlock" comes with many functions, xBlock performs cookie cleaning, Internet cache cleaning, scans for many popular spy software packages and performs permanent file shredding. Check for Updates OFTEN. xBlock releases enhanced features and updates of new spyware on a regular basis. XBlock is often revised/updated weekly.

http://www.xblock.com/download-freeware.php

xBlock can also remove otherwise dificultt to get rid of persistent parisites that slow down your pc such as "EliteBar" ...

xBlock will often find and allow you to delete without having to use the other good utility of last resort; "hijackthis" which is often much too difficult for a newbie to use.

8. HiJackThis If you wish to download hijackthis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Note: Don't attempt to change anything with hijakthis unless you are absolutely expert in what you actually know... not think... that you know what you are doing...

Xblock can be used anytime and will also do a fairly quick (about 1 minute) scan of your pc files every time you start your computer.

I recommend you try all the above Freeware... and you'll probably even wonder why you did manage without XBlock. B)

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is the best I have found, it finds things that spybot and ad-aware doesn't and has a built in resident shield, so gives you constant protection.

More than one anti-virus product is always advisable.

The No.#1 rated commercial anti-spyware seems to be "Webroot Spy Sweeper". There's nothing it can't find that every other existing anti-spyware can. The only difference is that it may not catch a few left-over registry entries or files that other anti-spyware might. On the other hand, it may catch some left-over stuff that other anti-spyware can't. However, it will remove the stuff that can hurt you. It also has excellent real-time protection shields.

The next best free thing to that is:

Spybot Search & Destroy

Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal Edition

And of course, the most popular free anti-virus now is "avast! Personal Edition". :)

Well Webroot spysweeper is the clear winner. It has won the PCMagazine editors choice award for the 4th time.It wont the award for best spywarecleaner in IC CHIP India's shootout.
And Eastway Fx isnt an antispyware software and there are already a couple of softwares which targets Fx also!
Opera remains much more secure than Fx.

Combinatio of AdAwere and Spybot S&D is excellent choice for spyware. + if you are on Mozilla, and using one of standard antivirus software, that's what you need.

Webroot spysweeper

License: Free to try; $29.95 to buy....

Note: This trial version scans your PC for spyware with Spy Sweeper's state-of-the-art threat engine and offers proactive protection with Smart Shields. Removal is limited to the paid version
http://www.download.com/Webroot-Spy-Sweepe...4-10192729.html

Might be worth $29.95 to some... but many might/would rather have Freeware that will probably do the job of malware/spyware removal just as well (and "possibly" often even catch more than this praised by magazine review program) without the uh... added expense....

Doublet, I would normally agree with something similar, such as in the case of anti-virus but Spy Sweeper has been reported to catch more stuff than Spybot and AdAware combined (and that's not just free AdAware but the commercial Pro version). However, Spybot+AdAware combined is a very good combo. I use all three and Spy Sweeper caught more things than the other two. Also, Spybot's and Ad-Aware's real-time shields aren't as good. Spy Sweeper can also catch a new type of threat - rootkit spyware and viruses that hide themselves from normal anti-spyware scans.

By the way, don't just look at PC Magazine reviews with Spy Sweeper, look at various forums and user reports, personal site reviews and so on. :)

I recommend using more than a single anti-spyware program because each one can catch some left-over spyware stuff that the other could not. Even though the threat is gone, it still feels good to completely get rid of all the left-over junk.

mirrormask, I was already in the process of attaining and shortly (within the next day or 2) going to take version 4.5.7(?) spysweeper for a test run.

Would you not also recommend the use of registry cleaner? Does spySweeper does/or does not include one? Which registry cleaner have you found to be superior in doing a thorough cleanup combined with ease of use?

For registry clraning i use the reg cleaner included with Tuneup Utilities 2006.ONe reg cleaner i would avoid is regsupreme.
I have found Webroot to be much better than adware ,spybot as well as MS Antispyware.
