Just a question for webmasters, do you have to report your earnings and money that comes in through the site to the IRS for taxes or is this an individual thing that doesn't count?
Chris Houlihan
Yes, you need to report it.

You have to report the income as self-employment income, but you can also claim all the expenses involved also---your ISP monthly charges, if you have a dedicated phone line--if you have a specific area of your house where you conduct business (You can write off that percentage of the monthly utility charges)...The main thing is to keep good records of everything...

You would file it on a Schedule C (Profit or Loss From Business), and if you made any profit (income minus all your expenses), you would pay tax on that. The amount you pay is your Social Security/Medicare Contributions. If you live near a H and R Block, you can ask them for a free business recordkeeping booklet.

Don't you have to report only earnings over $500 or $600 ?
guitbowl
No... if you earn anything you have to report it, even though your expenses may be higher than your income. You don't have to pay self employment tax if you are self employed and your net earnings are 400.00 or more.
For example, if you redeemed from any of the PTR programs, you would have to declare that, but your expenses would be such things as your ISP bill, money you spend for ads, etc...which would probably come out to more than you earn from the different programs and that would help lower your overall tax bill...
