It does not matter what the day is called but people all over the world will be remembering that at 11:00a.m. 11th November 1918 the Great War which was later to be known as WW2 officially ended.
It was the war to end all wars but the politicians, egged on by the their electorate managed a peace treaty that ensured another world war.
And yes, they were world wars. Not just Europe and the USA were involved but men and women came from so many countries that were then part of the British Empire.
And since then so many men and woman service personnal have died in conflicts since. And are still dying today. And so many innocent civilians have been caught up in the wars. Many unsung heroes amongst the military and civilian population. Heroes on both sides of every war. My husbband was in the Merchant Navy as a young man. He met older seaman who had been in the Merchant fleet as young men. Men who knew only too well how lucky they were too be alive. Men who often had been on more than one boat that had been sunk. The men of the British Merchant Fleet had the highest risk of dying than any of the armed forces. You do not have to be in the military to fight a war.
Hatred is whipped up by a few people, Governments declare war and the military personnel just follow orders and do their duty. It is easy to look back and say "we were wrong to do x, y or z but for the men and women at the time there seemed nothing to do but follow orders.
I salute them the men and women on both sides of all conflicts today and thank them for their sacrifices.
But I also feel shame at the way our military personnel are let down. The percentage of homeless people and people in prison who are ex military is far, far higher than the law of averages say it should be. Why are Governments around the world not supporting these people better?
