It does not matter what the day is called but people all over the world will be remembering that at 11:00a.m. 11th November 1918 the Great War which was later to be known as WW2 officially ended.

It was the war to end all wars but the politicians, egged on by the their electorate managed a peace treaty that ensured another world war.

And yes, they were world wars. Not just Europe and the USA were involved but men and women came from so many countries that were then part of the British Empire.

And since then so many men and woman service personnal have died in conflicts since. And are still dying today. And so many innocent civilians have been caught up in the wars. Many unsung heroes amongst the military and civilian population. Heroes on both sides of every war. My husbband was in the Merchant Navy as a young man. He met older seaman who had been in the Merchant fleet as young men. Men who knew only too well how lucky they were too be alive. Men who often had been on more than one boat that had been sunk. The men of the British Merchant Fleet had the highest risk of dying than any of the armed forces. You do not have to be in the military to fight a war.

Hatred is whipped up by a few people, Governments declare war and the military personnel just follow orders and do their duty. It is easy to look back and say "we were wrong to do x, y or z but for the men and women at the time there seemed nothing to do but follow orders.

I salute them the men and women on both sides of all conflicts today and thank them for their sacrifices.

But I also feel shame at the way our military personnel are let down. The percentage of homeless people and people in prison who are ex military is far, far higher than the law of averages say it should be. Why are Governments around the world not supporting these people better?

You would think we would care better for the men and women who defend our freedom!

Sadly we do not and we should be ashamed of ourselves.

I saw part of a heartbreaking documentary last night. Rosa Monckton has a Down's Syndrome daughter, her great friend, and the girl's Godmother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales was the one who helped her come to terms with her baby's condition. Rosa was fronting the documentary, she was going round to talk to other parents with severely disabled children. It is so hard for them, they have to live with a disabled child 24/7 with out much support. And all too often siblings are carers as well as the parents cannot do it all.

And of course an equally heartbreaking film could have been done about those who care for sick adults, especially when they become wheelchair bound or have some form of dementia.

The rich of this world complain about a little bit of income tax but it would make such a difference to so many people if they had the help and support they need.

There has been a suggestion of an extra 10% for the top rate taxpayers. One top British artist has (allegedly) said if they do that she will go abroad. The woman is a mulit millionairess I would guess so she would not miss it. And is only 10% of the top rate, she would not have to pay it on all her income. She is a woman from an ordinary background where money was tight when she was young, she has had to struggle to get to the top. But she seems to have forgotten those she left behind who struggle to survive on the minimum wage or slightly above it so she can go eat in post restaurants and wear fancy clothes.
