Just thinking of registering a domain or two and I was surfing the web looking for how much it costs to register a domain nowadays. Seems that you can go as high as $15 and as low as $1.99.
What I need is just a domain name, so is there any reason why I should not go for the cheapest one? Or are there unreliable registrars around?

You should look into registrars who are offering coupon codes. I've gotten a few .com domains for $0.99 before with codes, where the normal price of a .com for that specific registrar is $10.95 or more.

Wow! That's cheap. Do you have any problems with them, I mean, are they reliable? I'm usually a little nervous when I get something too cheap.

The site
http://www.co.cc offers free domains for a year. They use .co.cc at the end. I signed up for one but don't know how they are yet, still waiting for them to activate it. Once they do I will let you know. There are no ads associated with the domain.

Too bad they only offer .co.cc domains. But I'm sure we'd still be interested at how the domains perform.

If you are only concern about domain then simply go to Godaddy for .99$ .info domain. I also have few .info domains because I was concern in domain only not what kind of domain that is.

What I meant was that I wanted just a domain name, and that I do not noeed that web hosting and email inboxes that might come with the domain name. I still want a .com domain name though.

I have my own web hosting so I basically need a domain registrar to register my domain. I do not need any other additional services from the registrar. I am only interested in .com domains. Although I am not looking to register a domain right now, I will be doing do in the future. Do I answer your question?

You might have heard of the notorious regfly.com? They offered domains at dirt cheap prizes, got in trouble with ICANN and lost their accreditation. Months and months of stress waiting for another domain registrar to pick up the domains. It truly was a huge mess.
Same with 1and1.com and estdomains.com, though I have no personal experiences with them.
Don't choose a registrar based only on their pricing. If you plan to reg a 100 domains, then yeah. But one single domain? A few more dollars a year is worth it.

Thanks for the info, AminoAcid. That was actually the reason I started this thread. I will look into those but it looks like I'd probably stick with Verio.

There are hundred thousands registrars, I still can't understand what kind of registration you are looking for? What should be characteristics of registrar that you are looking for? I have few domains at Godaddy, thetigerhost, nvhserver, etc. No problem at all.

I have already explained it in the best way I know how - that I need a domain registrar to register my .com domain name and that I do not need any additional services from them.
My original question that started this thread is whether all domain registrars are reliable given the difference in prices between them.

I went to DynDNS and they had a ath.cx domain and it was activated right away and was free.

I use website.ws for cheap domains, pretty decent hosting costs and a really good affiliate program.
The only thing with it is that I can't use a lot of advanced scripts (Oracle and such) but the nice thing about the affiliate program is that it makes it easy to make back the whole cost of the site.
If you're at all interested let me know and I can tell you a few things about it, it's great even if you just want to mirror a site with more capabilities since you can point people that way for the affiliate dollars.
They also do .coms like you were looking for.
(Oh geez, didn't notice, someone's been necroing ancient threads! Oops! Please don't do that!)

I would highly recommend godaddy. They have all the tools you need, and are pretty much the industry standard. While there are other decent options, godaddy definitely takes the cake.

I registered about 50 domains on 1&1 only to find out that there were some serious
lacking in the features department for my needs. Since then, I've moved all of them
to GoDaddy and been much happier.
If you are using Hostgator for your hosting (or something similar), it won't matter too much.
But, if you're forwarding and masking multiple affiliate links, the ability to set up to
90 subdomains (as GD does) will save you a TON of cash. 1&1 only offers 5 subdomains.
