Hi there.

I recieved an email from paypal today asking me to enter my member nunber to activate my account. I hadn't done that yet, so I don't know if it was for real or not. aj.gif

I've heard of so many paypal-like scams, and hackers that I didn't want to go thru the link in the mail.

Does this sound like something paypal would send out?

tkx, Kimmie

Did you just sign up? They will never send you an email asking for any personal information. What they will do is ask you to log in to your account www.paypal.com. I would contact them and DO NOT click the link if there was one sent to you.
missusturtle
I signed up with them in December, but I just started the verification process a month ago.

Here is a copy of the mail they sent me. --->

Subject: Enter your Member Number

Dear Kimberley XXXXXXXX,

This is a reminder that you need to retrieve your Member Number from
your next credit card statement so that you can enter it on the
PayPal website and Complete your Membership. The credit card to which
we sent the Member Number was added to your PayPal account on
15 April 2003, and ends in 1006.

Until you enter your Member Number, you may be limited in the amount of
money you are able to send. To find out how much you can send before
entering
your Member Number:

1. Log in to your PayPal account
2. Click the View Limits link next to the yellow Balance box
(if there is not a View Limits link, your account has no Sending Limit)
3. Your sending limit will appear beneath the 'Sending Limit' heading

How to enter your Member Number:

PayPal has charged a $1.95 membership fee to your credit card. You can
obtain and enter your Member Number by following the steps below:

1. In the item description section of your next credit card
statement, your 4-digit Member Number will be printed next
to the $1.95 PayPal Membership Fee. Check your next
statement to find your unique Member Number.

2. Click the link below and type in your unique Member Number:

https://www.paypal.com/MEM-NUMBER

If you access your credit card statement online, it may take up to
4 business days for your Member Number to appear. If you don't have
online access to your credit card statement, please wait for your
printed statement to arrive by mail.*

You will be able to use this funding source after you have successfully
entered your Member Number.

Remember, completing your membership is one of the requirements for
receiving your $5 New Account bonus.

Sincerely,

PayPal Credit Card Services

Hello,

Thats not a SCAM. To verify PayPal account you need to enter the MEMBER NUMBER. This number is in MEMO from the payment you got at your CC, so go to your bank, see you CC if you don't do it and then enter it and your account will be verified.

I don't know if its OK but I'm very tired and I go bed ad.gif

I did NOT have to do this when verifying my paypal acct. All I had to do was enter in the small amounts that they deposited into my cc account to prove it was a valid card. I would contact paypal directly before you do anything...

You sure you're thinking of paypal? I seem to remember that was AnyPay's verification process (I think it was AnyPay).

PayPal has always been a 4 digit number in the transaction description in your statement as far as I know.

Paypal use a four digit code which gets placed on your CC statement when they take the USD1.95 surcharge out. They then, once you have sent money, add the USD1.95 back to your paypal account.

I can't remember , I have been a member so long...if you really are in doubt. Contact them through the site and ask. Better safe than sorry.

Log in to paypal, NOT thru the e-mail inks, but thru your browser, and finish the verification, with your Credit card, this would be safest.

This is the same paypal letter I recieved when I was linking my cc up to it, so I would bet it is really paypal, but to make sure, I always go directly to the site thru my browser aa.gif

yep...that's what I did too when I opened my PayPal account back in November 2002, they sent a few cents and I had to give 'em the exact amount to verify my bank account...but I don't have a cc to verify either.

If your US based then that is what they do for a US bank account then that would explain a couple of cents going in and out.

But judging by the person posting this they are Non-US, which pushes it to Paypal taking out $1.95 and asking for the 4 digit code off the statement.

Thanks for all your input guys! ab.gif

I'm not from the US, but just a little north of there (any guesses? lol)

I followed your advice and went to the paypal site to verify my account. I just wanted to know if this was something that I needed to report to paypal or not. I thought I had read somewhere that paypal never sends you emails, but perhaps that was another site.

Thanks for your help! be.gif

Nope, PayPal sends site updates, etc every now and then. What they *don't* do is send you links to log into your account.

The basic idea is, make yourself a bookmark to https://www.paypal.com

*ALWAYS* use that to log into PayPal. NEVER enter your information into a form in an email, or on a login screen from a link in an email.

A simple step, and it stops all the scam emails from working, because you always go direct to the PayPal site to log in aa.gif

To verify the credit card
Read your next credit card statement

You'll find a paypal verification code (4 digit when I sign up last year)
enter the code and the process is completed.

You ONLY need to verify your credit card IF you have entered your credit card number in your paypal account. (usually for upgrade to premier/business paypal account)

If you haven't entered your credit card in your account / upgraded your paypal account but paypal send you this email, you should contact paypal about this issue.
