From what I recall on explanations given to me about this, programs get paid for unique IP addresses. Merchants can't tell if more than one person is viewing their ads if everyone is on the same IP address.

With folks on dial up, it's not much of a problem. All they have to do is disconnect, and reconnect.

Then if that is the case there is another ISP here that everytime you log on I get a new IP. this is DSL. But the thing is I don't wonna go with DSL I prefer to stay with cable. Oh well I guess the wife has to suffer lol

The cable company I am with assigns a differnet IP to each computer I have connected.

For what it's worth, I have 2 LinkSys (10/100) Networks set-up. One is connected to the cable modem with the uplink port and the other is connected to the first LinkSys using the uplink port on it. I have three compurters connected to the first LinkSys along with the uplink and another 4 computers connected to the second LinkSys. All have different IP's. The reason why I did it this way is because it was easier to run one wire (from the four computers) to the first LinkSys instead of four.

If I want to change the IP on any of the computers all I do is present a different MAC address to the cable modem (By changing the NIC) and I will get a new IP assigned automatically.

My Cable company does charge for extra IP's but I gladly pay for it so I don't have to share any connections or install software and extra NIC's to do it.

Another side note: When we were on Win98 it was harder to manually configure the networks and keep them running right. As soon as we upgraded to XP everything was done automatically for us by the O/S. Really neat!
