Luckyearners about 2 weeks ago supposidly got "hacked" and lost it's database. Well, after a week or 2, they still don't have their act together, and i still haven't received an e-mail from them since the 2nd day this started. My earnings were reset. Did the admin run off?? or does he just not know how to restore his back-ups?? anybody else having this problem??

Hey Lan,

I wish you all the luck with getting LE back up and running again. I have complete faith in you and know everything will be alright. Don't listen to the negative people. If they've been a member of any of your sites then they know you will get everthing back to normal.

Databases don't just malfunction. Most of these sites are using MySQL and look where it's hosted, www.godaddy.com.

It is highly unlikely they got "hacked". From my experience, when a server gets "hacked" more than just a couple of independent tables get dumped. If you have multiple sites (aren't you also Mailing Heaven?) they would have hit those too if they are on the same server. There are few ways a cracker can just corrupt data in a protected database without running queries on it (and they can't do that without privelages (and you can't get those on a secure server)). Has anyone else from godaddy.com got hacked? Are they related to GoMamma?

It's okay if you accidentally messed up the tables. But please don't lie to us. I'm not saying you are, I'm simply saying that it is highly unlikely you got "hacked".

If it is the case that your data was corrupted through no fault of your own, it's time to switch hosting companies.

I have seen a lot of WMs accuse hackers of corrupting their data, every time there is a problem with their database (it never seems to be their fault). It's real convenient to blame someone else for your own mistakes. I'm not calling you a liar, I'm saying it's highly unlikely.

Those of you that know how databases work (particularly MySQL) will know what I'm talking about.

In the first place Lan's sites are not hosted by godaddy.com...get your facts straight.

I agree with you that databases do not just malfunction, however your statement pertaining to independent tables not being able to be dumped is incorrect. If someone breaks the db password, and there are scripts out there targeted to do that very thing, then the database can be accessed. Using multi word combinations such as blank_time or blank_7_time are harder to crack. I'm not saying that the database was hacked or not hacked, what I am saying is that someone who knows the db structure of a particular site could very well get into specific tables if they so chose.

Please don't mislead everyone into believing that Mysql is "hack proof", it's not. Mysql is as vulnerable to hacking as any other database. Maybe you'll remember the credit card hacking previously done? I believe one of the programs used was a button prompting the user to create a credit card pipeline, which went right into the database. Thousands of credit card numbers were stolen as a result. Rather inventive yes?

And I do agree with you about the claims of hacking by some disreputable webmasters concerning their databases getting hacked.....but how about the ones that buy an existing program and say there are too many cheaters so they dump the database.

I think this is a great opportunity to educate the non-technical webmaster on how to keep their database in sync by performing regular maintenance, and how to prevent data from becoming corrupt. How about addressing the use of stored procedures?

I've been reading a lot of your posts in different threads and frankly for one so technical you don't seem to have a lot to offer in the way of how to make things better. Instead you gripe and complain repeatedly about how ignorant webmasters are. I guess you are too caught up in your own self-promotion under the guise of consumer advocacy. More's the pity as you could have been actually have been helpful.

I believe that Lan will get her database up and running. She works hard, runs good programs, and is willing to LEARN how to make things better in the future.
