You might want to contact your phone company to see if they offer DSL. I get that through mines and it is included with the phone bill.

Yep, they do, it's $160 setup then $60/mo just for the DSL, phone is separate. sad.gif

We have a teeny tiny, small town phone company owned by a man and his daughter. They have one part-time tech guy.

Ouch. What about cable? It's just as good and might be cheaper.

Not available. Would rather have that than DSL even, but not likely to be around here any time soon.

I pay $10.95/month for my dial-up, and it sux just as bad as the twenty dollar stuff, only cheaper laugh.gif

DSL is not available, and cable is 5 miles down the road. If 6 families want cable, they'll run it out here. So far it's just us--I don't think the cows out here would have any use for cable.
I'm waiting for some satellite equipment to fall from the sky and into our yard--then maybe I'll get some speed out here.

I feel your pain! sad.gif

Similar problems here.

There is a company in the county seat that offers cable (opposite direction from the $14.95 DSL). I called the cable isp and asked if there was any chance at all they might come this direction. They said it would be just too cost prohibitive. They would have to run the lines for 15 miles coming this direction before they hit the first house (and then another 6 or 7 miles to my house after that).

And then there would be far too few people who would use it after they got here. So they don't expect to get out here in our direction any time in the forseeable future.

What about wireless cable?

Have you thought about Satellite Internet? They sometimes have higher equipment fees but are generally faster than dial-up or even DSL and reasonably priced per month.

!!!!!!!!! OUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm paying 21.90 ? a month for dialup thats 24/7 biggrin.gif
I wanted to get DSL but until they make it like dial up that you can use your acct on any line then dialup is the only thing for me.

Poor Mrs Free... I know what you mean. I live in a somewhat rural area and it's just amazing how suddenly I became less valuable as a consumer when I moved out here.

I remember when we were getting our utilities set up for the move, I was talking to TimeWarner cable and they were telling me something about how I'd have to speak to the city council about getting TW services. Um... what city council?... it's a little subdivision of houses.. we don't even have a police dept, we pay to have a sheriff assigned to our area, it's a few dollars a month added onto our water bill. huh.gif

Aren't you in Tx too? Don't forget about how they're trying to do that "redlining" thing, sorting us into areas based on what they consider our "value" to be...

late last year, SBC announced plans to build fiber-optic networks that will deliver voice, high-speed Internet and television services under an initiative called Project Lightspeed. In reports to investors in November, 2004, the company illustrated its plans to target only 5 percent of "low-value" consumers, while deploying the advanced services to 90 percent of "high-value" neighborhoods and to 70 percent of "medium-value" neighborhoods.
