I bought myself a new harddisk because the other had a problem in windows so I put that one a slave and the new one as master. Then I tried to install windows but halfway there was an error and now it doesn't work anymore. So I can't enter windows but is there a way to format the new HD without being in Windows? I can't find a MS-Dos thing where you can enter "format c:" (or "d:" in this case) Is there a way to do this? unsure.gif

Thanks for your help...

yes there's a way to format using MS-DOS.
actually that is the only way i know ohmy.gif

1> Make a booting disk
2> Config the BIOS feature when you restart the puter
(by clicking F8 or Delete key continuously)
and change the "First device boot", so that A drive(floppy disk) comes first
3> Save&Exit. Restart the puter, put the booting disk.
4> If it loads as A:> in the DOS,
enter format c:

5> After that, config the BIOS once again
so that your CD Rom(D or E drive) comes first.
6> Restart the puter and Put Windows CD.
7> Install~

well, that's how i've been doing so far.
not sure if there's any easier way unsure.gif

hope you got what i'm saying btw wacko.gif

making a booting disk is really easy,
go to control pannel>add/remove programs>bootdisk>make one tongue.gif
(btw, you said you can't load your windows right? blink.gif
go to your friend's house then heh)

or you can just go to those sites joem posted up there
and download/save one smile.gif

i think at least you gotta try installing with the new cd
and if it still doesn't work, crash your puter wacko.gif

it should work with the new one, i guess smile.gif

Hi there.

Formatting drive c: ---> http://freepctech.com/pc/001/002.shtml

Hmm as for the windows error, how far does the install get to ?
If it gets to the detection of hardware part then it may be a conflict.
Also do you have S-ATA hard disks ? on you pc? If so then this may help

Haven?t tried out yet, currently working at my brothers computer but I?ll try maybe later or tomorrow, I?m a bit sleepy for worries blink.gif

...Rick
~penguin~
I'm now busy walking from my brothers room to my own so I'm pretty sportive right now laugh.gif

It looks like it's working, currently formatting the HD on another way then before (why are there about 3, and maybe more, ways to format a HD? wacko.gif )

...Rick

added: I completely formatted it but when I tried to install it I saw there was still a part with partition and one which wasn't...when I tried to install I got a blue screen and restart wallbash.gif

WHY THE ###### DIDN'T THEY MADE IT JUST A BIT EASIER??? ticked.gif ticked.gif ticked.gif

I can?t even install Windows wacko.gif

Could it be possible I instert the disc in another computer and copy all data (including Windows) to that other disc and then put it back in my normal computer? Because it looks like this is impossible to do...so frustrating... even an error with an empty HD sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

added 2: I?m going to put my old HD in this computer, place all important files in here and then put it back in my own computer to install Windows on the old harddisk unsure.gif

added 3: I put the HD in my bro's computer and I'm currently copying 30Gb to his harddisk to make sure I won't lose it because some people will kill me if I do ( blink.gif ). I wonder if there's anyone reading my story laugh.gif mellow.gif
jkjo
i'm reading laugh.gif

still getting errors with empty HD sounds like a hardware collisioin
(not sure if i'm using the right word in english) to me unsure.gif

and that's a much serious problem from what i've heard.
i think you're gonna have to call a tech-guy, penguin ohmy.gif

This is the error message I got (got I feeling I should have posted that before, but I didn't pay attention to it blushing.gif ):

BAD_POOL_CALLER

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...md_stp_czgw.asp
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_...Q_20749388.html

Could it be that it's a RAM-memory-card from my old computer that I put in the new one? Or what else? unsure.gif

...Rick
~penguin~
Right now I'm halfway the installation, when that lightblue-screen appears...39 minutes to go...

I got an error: 800b0100

And when I checked the logbook it said something like:
QUOTE
Error:
The signature for Windows XP Professional Setup is invalid. The error code is 800b0100.

No signature was present in the subject.

Fatal Error:
Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more information.

But then in Dutch, I tried to do a Google-search but I couldn't find anything, someone help? sad.gif

best thing to do - just throw that HDD away biggrin.gif I think mechanics have failed, in that case HDD won't survive a XP installation... btw, is your XP cd working? I mean, did you isntall it succesfuly on other machines? it also can be a problem... brw, sorry for asking, may be it's pyrated version with bugs? My xp CD, for example didn't have a HDD format option biggrin.gif

Now, issue #1, did you change jumpers on the HDD's? While putting one on slave and the other on master, you need to adjust jumpers accordingly!

Issue #2, I don't get why you use boot disk to format HDD, windows installation cd has that option! Enter bios, check boot options, turn boot from cd on, insert your XP disk into the CD-Rom. Follow instructions, and there will be a screen "do you want to format HDD?" ....

#1: I feel a bit stupid now blushing.gif
I've got two Maxtor-HD's with the same amount of GB's so I thought they were the same. I checked the new one and it said on top of it ""No Jumper = DS (Slave)" so I thought that would be the same with the other one... but as I see know, I need a jumper for that one. Now I'm going to do a search for that small evil thing wacko.gif

#2: Tried already before...didn't work.

...Rick
Eoin
#1 if you don't have a jumper, just use a wire, or a paperclip or any metal conductor (you don't wanna see the inside of my pc, it's full of make fit tongue.gif )

biggrin.gif I believe we got to the bottom of the problem biggrin.gif and Eoin is right, if you don't have jumper, just use metal conductor, there is no difference...
