What programming languages do you need to know to design a good website (like php and stuff)? Are there any good online tutorials that can teach you how do to them? I learned a little html last summer, but I can still only do basic web sites.

you don't need any programming skills to design a webpage... Just HTML can be enough... But if you want to add extra to your site i would recommend PHP.

Here is a list of site that i really like...

Also you need a good HTML editor program, Tucows has several:
http://www.tucows.com/htmledit95_default.html
I also have a copy of one I first started on that I got from Tucows called Web-O-Rama, but it's not at Tucows anymore, if you want I can send it to you if you email me.
You could also if you can afford it get yourself a copy of Frontpage 2000 it's an awesome program

HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language, this is what is used to display what you see, not PHP, not Perl, not ASP, none of that is used to display what you see..

PHP, and ASP are HTML Embelled Scripting Languages, meaning that you insert the stuff into your HTML tag if the web server parses it or passes it thru something that does.

Perl is a language used just for the output, it doesn't automatic start outputting your stuff, its not an HTML embelled language, just a scripting language, that can be used with CGI to make server side webpages.

Don't think you get more features using PHP, you get no more features in your HTML, the only thing that you get is the ability to do thing on/with the server.

What you need to do is Learn HTML first, just forget about Perl, PHP, ASP, any of that..

yup I totally agree
try to learn HTML
and try to learn how to use a image editing program -the one you like the most

that's all you need to make a pretty good website

once you are done with it you should start learning more about ccs and javascript
and if you wanna program then you should go for php, asp, etc.

but if you just wanna make a website, then just learn HTML aa.gif
bux
they're all right, you don't have to know PHP in order to design your web-site.
PHP is only a requirement if you wish to code-into your web-site special tasks that are for an example automation of specific tasks.

just grab a good HTML tutorial and read it carefully...
you can easily find several tutorials that are good and also free by just loading google.com on your browser and use the keywords "free html tutorial"

then use notepad to edit your pages, if you don't feel advanced enough for doing this, you can always download an HTML editor (some freeware can also be found )

Well that Php I asked the information systems professor and she said that MySQL and PHP have to do with databases often used for web sites (have to look at that email about PHP and MySQL) You need to learn HTML to do a web site and/or learn about adobe dreamweaver. To do graphics for it you need to learn photoshop, paint shop pro, and/or fireworks. The language used to build the site is HTML and javascript to run simple programs (simplified version of Java, a complex and pwerful language used for chats, games, etc)
I am studying web design at the communtiy college check your local one for web desgin courses.
