this is a great act of kindness if ever i have seen one!

on saturday, january 8, australia setup a huge concert/telethon. it was to help get donations for the tsunamis that hit asian districts. it was held at sydney opera house (concert) and melbourne cricket ground (telethon) and featured some of australia's best celebrities. throughout the night, some big donations came through from some of the big australian companies. at the end of the night, over $15 million was raised!

then today (january 10), another kind act - this time it also involved international help as the australian cricket board gets together the best players of the world for a one-off cricket match. featured players like tendulkar, ganguly, lara, ponting, gilchrist, dravid, mcgrath and many, many more. prominently the 2 teams were called "Asia" and "Rest of the World". ROW won in the end, but all up managed to raise a further $10 million plus!

i am sure that there are other countries doing there own money raising events, and if so, post them here!

so in conclusion, thank you to all aussies for the support for these unfortunate people - makes you proud to be an aussie! wink.gif

Yeah, they had a tv show of a whole evening here with basically all celebrities participating, and special songs, and they raised 112 million total.

I'm not a basketball fan, but there's this:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1959163

Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal and four other NBA players represented by agent Arn Tellem have raised $208,000 to help victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

The players promised to donate $1,000 for every point they score in games played this week.

The NBA players' union has decided to donate $500,000, and the NBA will match the gift, a league spokesman said Friday.

The donations are to be made to UNICEF, NBA spokesman Brian Flinn said.

This is amazing and God must be very proud of the people. If only they could do this more often for fund raisig for humanitarian organisations to help the needy, what a difference the world can be. The poor often just need a loan to buy something like a cow, fishing boat or taxi to support themselves and their families.
