From one website I get a search link everyday. Tells me I get it because I have it checked. Very Wrong. Everyone who knows me knows I don't do searches period. Yes I checked to make sure it wasn't checked.
Then I get this the last 2 days:
"You are receiving this email because you have selected Site Support in your interests"
Wrong again. It is not selected, nor in this PTR would I even consider it. (Only there cause I am very close to payout)
I've seen alot written about targeting emails lately. I know alot of sites do, but what do you do about the ones that straight out lie about it?

I am seeing a trend lately that we are targettted for search ads if we live in search friendly country, NOT because we check search as an interest.
I do search for a few sites and do admin searches at deserving sites but is sending me a zillion search ads really targetting JUST because I live in a search friendly country??

why not just ignore the message and delete it?

I think I know the site you are talking about and I actually contacted the webmaster - they told me just to delete the ads - when I replied about the "You are receiving this email because you have selected Site Support in your interests"
I never received a reply! Figures!

Why should I spend time deletng hundreds of emails if I opted out? I shouldn't get them if tey target properly

Well sas, good thought, except I am taking a screenshot everyday so they can't delete me for not clicking, inactivity whatever. Doesn't quite work that way with all sites.
And halsten, yes, that is the response I would expect.
Thanks for the responses,

Suz,
Absolutely right. I could care less that I am in the US etc., I feel like I could get deleted if they find out. Then I would have to go to a forum and complain and hear how it is all my fault. LOL

Well i know , there has been times i have personnally messed up in the targetting on my sites and have not caught it until a member has emailed me . Easy to do with so many emails.
But it doesnt sound like the case here.
I wish more sites would start targetting point search emails. Unless they are admin , i dont want points. I have enough emails daily , without getting point searches. Those are the ones that really drive me crazy.
I think point searches , unless from admin , are just the worst slap in the face as a member.
So program owners, stop selling point ad searches , if u wont at least target them to members that want them. Because i refuse to do a search for anyone , unless admin support ones , that are worth points. I am sure i am not the only one that feels this way..

I agree. Unless the points are converted to cash, or used for upgrades I will not do any point seaches either (save for site supports, I do try to do those as much as possible)

Suz and Kim you ae absolutely right. A targeted ad is an ad sent to members that selected that particular interest in their user info to receive ads about. Targeting is so easy to do. All the wm would have to do is check the searchers box in the targeting area when setting up an ad and it would only go to members that selected searches. Anyone can make a mistake as edskers mentioned but lots of sites just send all ads to everyone all the time. That is why a lot of advertisers are not getting good results

I am SO with you on this one! The PTR I'm thinking of includes the same links in the daily "support" mails as the regular mails and when I feel like it I click the support links in the regular mails.

Er...

I have, huh?

Well just click the ad and wait for the timer to expire to get the credit. You are never obligated to search and I certainly wouldn't do a search for points whether they are support mails or not.

Yeah, unless you can actually do something really worthwhile at a site with your points (beyond the usual free advertising options), such as free referrals, membership level upgrades or converting points to cash for example, then I don't even bother with them at all. Point ads should always be voluntary and have the option to opt out of them. Point search ads should be another seperate category with the same level of discretion regards to member participation.

So if a site doesn't have an option to opt out of searches, sends international searches to all but only sends search country searches to search country members that isn't targeting?

Hmmm I think this is just an honest mistake. I originally had site support mails selected (I just ticked everything when I signed up except obviously the cheat categories lol), but later I unselected it and have not recieved another one since. Like edskers mentioned, mistakes do sometimes happen, contact the PO and I'm sure the problem will soon be resolved.

Yes but in my post I was referring to sites where I DO have the option to opt out and I did so. Still receive them as "targetted to search friendly countries"

I can see once as a mistake. Or even once in awhile. But I don't see daily for the past several days as a mistake. And it's not something I feel like complaining to the PO about. Just thought I'd add my voice here since the thread was already started. It's annoying to delete them, but it's not contact-worthy, imo.

No that is not targeting. To target an audience it should be sent to only people that asked to receive it. And if a wm does not have way for you to opt out for search ads then they cannot say their ads are targeted. They are just sent as general ad to all

I just logged into my account after a break for a few days and low and behold I have a daily site support email when I haven't had site support checked in the interests for weeks! I never thought this would happen to me and this is the first one I have got since unchecking that option...
