She's so sick, my little darling. I'm heartbroken. She has been with me for 11 years. She was my comfort in sorrow, and shared my joy in happy times.
She's not in pain, but sooo weak, and even the vet doesn't know if she will pull through.
I've been fighting for her life for 4 weeks now. Some days I thought she will make it, she eats and drinks, and lookes lively. But some days she staggers, falls down, and can't even make it to the litter box.
I just can't get myself to take the final step and release her. She means so much to me. She's only 13 years old, that's not old for a cat. She could have a few years yet if she were to pull through.
I could accept it, were she just to go to sleep peacefully. But to take her to the vet and give her the deadly injection, that is something I cannot get myself to do (yet).
I've been crying all day. I look at her as she is sleeping in her cosy box all curled up. Oh God, I love her so much. My head hurts, my heart hurts. What am I to do??
Can I ask you for a prayer for my little one?

I don't know what I would do if this happens to my cat.

I am so sorry about your kittie. You and your little one will be in my thoughts
I know its hard to make that decision and nobody likes to have to make it (I have done it before) but realise she/he might not be in pain but what is their quality of life?
You are in my thoughts and I hope you get the strength if needed to make the decision for your little one

Vielen lieben Dank / Thank you all so much for your comforting words.
Just as I was reading them, she got up and walked to the kitchen. I followed her to make sure she is okay. She sat in front of her food bowl and ate a good portion. As I watched and encouraged her, I turned my head and looked out of the window. It just started snowing! A gentle, silent fall of white flakes. It looks so peaceful.
When she was done eating, I gently wiped her snout with a wet cloth. I picked her up (gosh, she hardly weighs a thing) and took her to the lounge. I have a heating pad underneath the blanket on the settee, so it's nice and warm for her. She's laid down comfy and purrs when I stroke her.
Bless you all for your thoughts and prayers. I won't give up hope. Not yet.

Well, she seems to enjoy her food well enough, even though it tires her even to eat. She is picky enough to let me know once in a while "No, I don't want the kidney diet stuff today! Can I please have a fresh portion of normal cat food?"
She seems to eat quite a lot, but still is skin and bones. I guess it will take a long time before one can actually tell that she is filling out again.
I'll go shopping now, to pick her up some goodies.
As long as she purrs, I won't give up hope.

Hugs to you. Gentle pat for your little one. Eating is always a good sign. Have you thought about baby formula or something like "Ensure" to add to her diet to give her a little extra and easily digestable nutrition?

*sigh* yes, I have, but the problem is, she has to eat diet food because of the kidney failure she had. The diet food is extra low in protein, for that is what irritates the kidney. With cats that is a tricky thing, because normally they eat meat which is lots and lots of protein. The diet food has more rice and a bit of veggies in it. But the vet has given me a powder, of that I have to mix a little bit into the food. It's extra vitamins, minerals and malt to give her strength.
And she can't have any milk, not even the lactose free one. And she used to love that so much

@ all:
You are so kind, thank you soooo much for your comforting words, thoughts and prayers.
We have 3 cats, and Fleckchen is our oldest. She is so loving, I have never before in my life seen a cat like her. And she is so pretty. A tiny calico, a lucky cat, as they say. We rescued her from being shot 11 years ago. Exactly at my son's 10th birthday. She was his best friend during his childhood and teenage years. She always slept in his bed on his pillow, she comforted him during the troubled puberty time and she was his confident.
And when I was going through a very sad and lonely time in my life, she always sensed when I was low, came up to comfort me, laid on my chest and rubbed her head under my chin.
She is not just a pet, she is a friend indeed. So now its our turn to comfort her and care for her. And we do it gladly.
We keep hoping.

GOOD NEWS !!!
I'm sure all the prayers and thoughts of you wonderful people must have had a hand in it.
Fleckchen is feeling better! She's been eating very well (and using the litter box a lot *lol*) and drinking lots of special cat's milk with added vitamins and iron, which I got for her yesterday.
She's been sleeping soundly, not just dozing. And half an hour ago she actually walked out to the balcony for 2 minutes of fresh air!
She's even attempting to wash her snout after eating. But being still wobbly on her legs, I give her help with that.
Maybe we have a joyful Christmas after all
Tiger (him) and kitten (me) and Fleckchen, Shannon and Sir Mortimer thank you very very much for all the human and feline loving thoughts and prayers you have send.

I'm so glad to hear that her condition is improving and will continue to keep her in my prayers.
I worry about my grumpy old boy at this time of year, he is missing a leg, part of his bowel, has a pin in another leg and has a genetic curvature of the spine. He gets achey and sluggish in the winter, but the vet says he's in good health and has many good years left. I just feel bad when I see him moving slowly instead of darting around like he does in the summer.
I know your kitty is special to you and I'm sure she knows it too. She knows that she couldn't possibly have found a better "human pet".

is kitty anemic?
kittenffm
Dec 23 2004, 08:46 AM
Sometimes I think cats are like people. Not only do they have amazing personalities, they suffer the same as we do.
I hope your "grumpy old boy"

gets perky again soon. It sounds as if you are the kind of person too that always gets picked by sorry cases.
All ours are such cases too. We rescued Fleckchen from being shot. We found Shannon in Ireland on the side of a very busy dual carriageway. She was only 4 weeks old and all alone. We could only guess on how she got there. But we broght her over to Germany (and what a difficult mess that was, what with airlines, customs, quarantine, and what have you!). And our "newcomer", Sir Mortimer Hasenfuss III, we got from the shelter last year. Nobody wanted him, because he was scared of people and needed other cats for company. Well, as soon as we brought him home, he fell madly in love with Shannon. They are inseparable now. Real "Kuschelkumpel" (cuddle buddies

).
Even though Fleckchen is the smallest (but oldest) of the lot, she always made sure everybody understood that she is the "Queen bee" *lol*
I really cannot imagine a life without cats. They are sometimes more entertaining than telly, a better footwarmer than any blanket, sillier than any clown, and a better listener than many a person.

hmm tempt her into eating some raw beef mince (make sure it's fresh and served at room temperature) If she's got all her teeth you could even give it to her cubed into little peaces.
Gums and nose also go pale when they are in shock. Doesn't mean that she's anemic.

. One of my boys had a burst stomach alcer a few months back. If found him all lifeless and in severe shock. He pulled through and is already back to his normal self, trying it on with the girls and playing with his kids. He's 8 yrs old btw LOL
Hope she'll get better and that you'll enjoy many X-mases to come together.

Oh, I know she is anemic, because the blood test showed it. Due to the infection she had. The vet told us the results of the blood tests.
And she isn't in shock, thank goodness. She's been so ill for 4 weeks now....

.... but we still hope for the best.

Hiya, I am praying for your kitty and you! Did the vet happen to check for a blockage? A xray ``should` be able to tell if the poor kitty has one. I am glad shes not in pain (then you may have to make a different choice, but rember it is a choice made out of love and kindness and I believe one day you will be together again and she will be very grateful that you made the right choice, wich you will because you love your kitty) I will keep your kitty in my prayersd thru the holidays when I cant be here to see how she is for a couple days, you will both be on my mind, and all my fur kids send hugs and kisses (and thats a lot, 2 cats, 1 dog, 1 hamster and 9 ferrets

Dear friends,
yesterday evening Fleckchen hat a weak spell again, but around midnight she got better again. This morning she was lively again, eating well and even "talking" a bit. It's a hard struggle, but we think there is a slow progress after all.

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and comforting words.

Dear friends,
Despite all hope we lost the fight.
Fleckchen died at home and in my arms yesterday afternoon at 4:30.
We are glad that we did not have to make the dreadful choice, but rather could care for her until the end.
I have never faced death before like that, and to witness the last gasps for air was heartbreaking. But it is a comfort that I could stroke her until the end and keep on wispering her name and tell her that I love her.
Fleckchen was put to rest last night at 8:30 under a huge lime-tree, while a full moon was giving light to our sad duty.
Thank you all for comforting us during this sorrowful time.
