I plan to start a website soon and i just wanted to know whic database would be the best. I will be hiring some proffesional programer for this purpose .
I plan to get more information and offer demograhic targetting.
If you have been to IPTL, it does have targetting but i want to have even more options

Oracle I know is too expensive sad.gif outa my league.
mysql, i heard, has many limitations but since it comes free its everyones favourite. Any recomendations on databases
I see that CC and CYCP are the regulare choices of many PO's, but i dont think it will suffice my requirements.
asp, I have heard and correct me if i am wrong , outweighs php in many aspects including securtity. but is there anything better than these.
Thank you in advance

I've found MySQL and PHP to be a simply fantastic combination.
I have yet to see ANY reason for using ASP, other than a desire to donate money to Bill Gates wink.gif
As for the limitations of the CC script - it is extremely customisable (morethan most peopel seem to know), and add-ons can also be written specially for your project if required. I think you'll find this a much morerealistic approach than possibly paying 1000's to a programmer for a new script, which will then also require you to spend money regularly on bug fixes, new features, etc (they WILL happen - you can count on it). If you need any further info on customising and cusstom add-ons, just let me know smile.gif

CC is VERY customizeable. Most people have no idea just how versatile it is, but it can be used for much, much more than *just* a ptr.
I'm using it as an affiliate script, and it can be used as a billing script, and a lot of other things.
Version 2 is even going to have a built in shopping cart, a full-fledged banner exchange, and much more.

PHP is an opensource project, meaning it is FREE and always updating. Stable versions of PHP5 are being released very often, however most host use (or should use) 4.3 and above. The community support and support from php.net is IMO outstanding. MYSQL is also an opensource project with the same level of support as PHP. Additionally it will cost you LESS to have someone program in PHP/MYSQL then to use ASP. PHP/MYSQL is also a standard on most hosting providers as they run on Unix based systems (Redhat, Fedora, etc), ASP is a Micro$oft product and is used on Windows hosting servers (more $$$$).

MySQL has no limitations whatsoever that would apply to your project.

PHP is faster than ASP in any test you run. Security is irrelevant as bad or good security is in the programming, not the language.

MySQL has a lot of limitations, like missing VIEWs, inside SELECTs and many more useful features that let speed up the script work. Some of these features are coming in the new MySQL version (currently using 1.4.2 or similar), but it is still not that stable to install on a server and use... anyway, putting Oracle on a site would be a more stupid thing to do, though... smile.gif so go on, and use MySQL wink.gif
