MY PAYPAL ACCOUNT JUST GOT HACKED!!! I barely ever use that one; the one that I use for GPT programs and the one that I use for little payments is linked to a checking account that usually has a maximum of $50 deposited....but...my other one, which I barely used, is linked to my main checking account...AND TODAY, I TRIED TO LOGIN AND I COULDN'T, AND I CALLED MY BANK AND I HAD ONLY $23.95 LEFT!!!
I lost $700!!!

Okay, this may not seem like a lot to you guys, but I'm a student, and now I have no idea how I'm going to pay my portion of the rent rent for February (I split the rent with my mom) and how I'm going to afford to pay my car payments and insurance.
What do I do? Would reporting this to paypal do any good? (I already did...and I cancelled that bank account and transferred what little money I had left in there to my savings.) Is there any way I can get this money back???
Sorry, panicking...

That's a shame!! I feel awful for you but I can't help, I don't know anything about Paypal. But I would think your bank would have records of where your money went. Did you try them?

I'm sure most banks have a protection policy if this kind of thing happens (beyond your control) and that your only liable for the first $50..
you'll need to check with your bank

omg! i didn't even know you could fund paypal from a check account! i thought it was only credit card
*going to remove my bank account now*

I am not sure where u r from...But here in Australia, if we have money taking by fraud out of our CC or other (if we had other to use..lol) we are NOT liable for it......I just ring my bank and they block it, even if it was a month back or so....I do not loseout....I had to use it once, and was very thankful

...I hope when you ring your bank it will all work out!

You should have contacted your bank. Then they could have tracked down where your money went, and would make contact to Paypal for you.

It was hard enough to cancel my bank account...I had to cancel the online account...I don't know if the checking account is still there...probably is (I'm so ignorant when it comes to these matters). It's holiday...Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
So I should check with the bank on Tuesday and see if I'm liable? But wouldn't I be since it was MY paypal account? It's just that someone who wasn't me decided to access my paypal account!!!! I've contacted Paypal...but I don't think they're going to do anything to get my money back!!!!!!!
Sorry, still panicky although a little calmer now.
And yes Kristin, you can fund your paypal account with your checking account...and unfortunately, that account is also linked to my debit card (which I use as my primary credit card for that account) so earnings were deducted immediately from my account. Otherwise, it would have taken that person a few days to get the money into paypal, etc. I knew I should have checked my ddrworld.com email account addy more....I could have seen a receipt for it or something, even though it probably wouldn't have done any good.
I think I'm just going to go downstairs and pretend the punching bag is the a$$hole who took my money.

OK, think for a second....
They must have paid someone from the PayPal account, right? To whom was it paid? For how much? When?
Look in the help section at PayPal and report it using the forms as a fraudulent transaction. If the e-gold scammers can reverse transactions, then certainly the honest people can too!

I'm so sorry Vitegurl. It seems like things aren't going your way lately. Weren't you the one that got $150 deducted out of your paycheck for something your coworker did? I hope you can get it worked out.

I don't have access to my paypal account anymore. I think they changed the email addy too...
Well, I still have uhh...60 dollars in my other paypal account...yay.
I dunno what to do now...it's holiday weekend so I don't know what I CAN do besides sit here and wait. And my last two paychecks have been small...first it was that stupid security alarm thingie, and then this time I had taken days off for my birthday and my cousin's birthday...so my paycheck was smaller.
I'm sorry, I'm trying not to feel sorry for myself or ask for anything from anyone. I just don't know what to do.
Well, just to warn people...make sure that the bank account that you have linked to your paypal account does NOT have a lot of money in it, and it might also be nice if the credit card you linked to it had a limit that is a little low.
And EStewart...doesn't look like 2003 is going too well for me

just how are we supposed to get our money from paypal without a checking account on it?
you can't get the money put on a credit card.
what in the heck are we supposed to do?
i been ripped off by an internet porn site once before cause somebody got ahold of my checking acct. # when i ordered a product by phone.my bank ended up eating my overdrafts out of courtesy to me(thank goodness for small towns banks). if they hadn't i would have been liable since the internet company was from overseas and our laws didn't apply to them.
i also think we should all flood paypal with email about this. their security really stinks. i see it on forums all over the net all the time how people are getting ripped off left and right.

i really am sorry for you vietgurl! i know what it's like to be short on cash

wish i had a boxing bag sometimes too.
i was going to remove my account and then i thought, no, i have an overdraft, and my bank manager watches my account like a hawk. she's nasty and i was thinking of changing her, but for the meantime, i might just keep her!!
vietgurl, i'm gonna to a search for you now

Well, you do know that you can use a practically empty checking account and get the money sent to you via check right? There's a fee, but it's safer...well, depends on the post office but still.
So my advice is use a checking account that doesn't have a lot of money in it for your paypal account....or at least when you withdraw the money to that checking account, transfer it immediately to your savings or something.

don't Panic this has hapened to a friend of mine. He contactd paypal and his bank paypall taracked the maony backto where it was trasnfered and identified they credit card and all other information involved at refunded his money. He had to file fraud charges with the local police and fill out all legal papers for internet fraud but paypal was very complete and cpmlitent in tracking the hacker. They can always follow the money trail.
Contact the paypal security imediatley with copies of your bank records. and any information you have.
They can and will get your money back it just takes a few weeksand you must file the paperwork.
I know its distressing and i hate that these hackers think they hurt no one. I hope you get it cleared up soon.

Did they hack your email address too???? As it is not that easy to remove a email addy from paypal. They ask you 100000 quetions. then send you a confirmation to your email and you need to confirm that too before the addy or access is removed
Request your password

Remove an address -> check the box, click a button, it's gone. The only Q you may get asked is 'Are you sure?'
Yep! You're right about that!
They do ask you "are you sure?"!

Sorry, panicking...
1. notify paypal, it may take them 30 days to investigate, but they can refund it.
2. notify your bank..
both your bank and paypal have a anti-fraud policy.
Your bank should be able to reverse the transaction.
EIther way, it will probably take 30-60 days to rectify.

Darn holiday weekend...my bank isn't exactly what you would call open
And I'm sure that the account did NOT get hacked through my computer (trojan or something)...I use a unique password for that account (I enter the wrong password on accident sometimes cuz I barely ever use that account), and I have 2 firewalls and an antivirus running...and I format my harddrive once every couple of months or so.
What's kinda amusing is that I talked to some people who do hack paypal accounts and sell them with full credit card numbers and stuff (the internet is such a screwed up place...) who used to hang out on shadowcrew.com (the site is gone...think the feds shut it down or something)...which is a hotbed for selling paypal accounts, credit card numbers, ss#, fake ids, etc....and they told me that they're gonna try to find out who did it. Gosh, I thought that by reading the posts on that forum, I was safe from hackers cuz I knew their every trick...but I guess I was wrong.
And as for checking account and minimum balances...ask for the term "free checking"...a lot of banks offer it...it's like no minimum balance (there's a minimum deposit, but you could always withdraw, heh), no fees, etc.
they did not hack my paypal address...it's a POP3 addy that I got through my domain name ddrworld.com....but they deleted it from the paypal site. I've sent a couple of emails to paypal and all I can do now is wait.
Gosh, I am so tired of this  ...I'm just gonna try to put this off of my mind and go to work later today. If I ever find out who did this...grrrrr.
