Well I lived on the east coast of the USA all my life and hurricanes are aweful NO doubt about that. I have been through a couple. BUT you do get plenty of warning...sometimes a week or more in advance.
I now live in the heart of "Tornado Alley". With tornados you are lucky if you have a couple of mins warning literally. I know both are terrible but I would take a hurricane over a tornado anytime

Saw some documentaries on Discovery Channel about tornado's in that "Tornado Alley" where you live. I couldn't believe the destruction some of those leave behind. Must be really scary.

When we toured the States we had a (small) tornado follow us somewhere near Des Moines. Never been so scared in my life. Fortunately it turned north, we where heading east. Do they usually change direction so suddenly?

Yes they can change direction quickly so I am told. Thank goodness I myself have never actually seen nor been in a tornado. I have lived here 3 years in september.

I remember the first time the tornado sirens went off in my town. I was taking a nap on my couch and my roomie came in and said(she lived here all her life and really isnt that scared ...well panicy like me of tornados)
You better grab you animals and head down in the basement didnt you hear the sirens? I said No OMG..lol I flew up half alseep (having to go to the toilet too but opted not..lol) grabbed my two cats who fought me tooth and nail as I ran down the spiral staircase. Then tried to get Gouda my 65 pound Boxer dog down the stairs and she wouldnt come so I had to carry her. NOT a good thing when you have to pee..lol I was shaking all over and freaking out...was really scarey to me. Thank goodness before that I made a survival kit for in the basement. water dog/cat food canned goods candles etc etc etc. Alot of places here arent lucky enough to have a basement. Some have shelters outside dug into the ground. Nothing more then sit in coffins...yikes..lol
Our basement was made especially for tornados...my roomies exa hubby was a master welder...its made completely out of solid steel and concrete...not much could get thru that trust me smile.gif

Must have been pretty awful for you at the time, but I couldn't help giggling, picturing the cats flying around and Gouda putting on the breaks.

What I remember from the Discovery Channel documentary is a story of a family with just such a shelter dug in the ground as you said. The tornado that hit them straight over the head was a "level 4" or something. They said the winds even tore the lid of the shelter and they where burried in rubble. Fortunately they survived, but their house was shredded to splinters. Unbelievable!

We live in Arkansas and also have lots of tornados. Last year we had a tornado shelter put in our back yard. It's very nice with a tv/radio/vcr for the kids (can run on batteries) and a porta-potty. laugh.gif We even put a little fridge down there. We have had days where the tornado sirens went off for hours. Before we had to huddle in a little bitty closet for hours until it was safe to come out. Hot and sweaty waiting for the weather to calm down. Ug. 5 people crammed in a 2x2 space. Talk about togetherness.........

Yikes! I couldnt deal with what you had before. Our basement I would guess is 12x10 feet never measured for sure. I redid it the year I moved here because the basement had leaked for years (the guy didnt seal the cement) and the sheetrock and everything was gross! I wouldnt even go down there unless I had to. So I tore everything off the walls but left the ceiling fan Sealed all the walls and painted the cement floor green...looks like a tennis court..lol Also there is a futon down there should we have to "live" there for awhile.

I went to college in the midwest, and for some reason I really wanted to see a tornado. I think I saw something on the Discovery Channel about stormchasers or something, and just fancied seeing one with my own eyes. Well after about 3 years of living there, the tornado sirens in the town where I worked went off, and I thought "Oh cool!" and went to call my mom to tell her "Hey, we're having a tornado, isn't that cool?" Well I got her answering machine, and started to leave a message, and suddenly realized, "oh NOOOOOOO! it's a tornado!" Suddenly didn't seem so cool anymore! Needless to say, I started crying, and left a message for my mom that gave her the impression that I was about to die! Turns out there wasn't even a tornado. Lightning had hit something that set off the sirens. My poor mom had to hear this horrible scary message on her answering machine, followed by one saying "oh nevermind, it was just lightning..." sad.gif unsure.gif smile.gif rolleyes.gif
