My cat Maggie has been sick for about a week now. I don't know what to do. She's 17 years old (I've only had her for 6 years) The vet did blood work nothing showed up. So he did an x-ray, there is something showing. It's not obstructing her stomach at all. He can't tell what it is without surgery. He told me he can't operate cause she's too old and weak.
I've been feeding her soft food by a dropper since last tuesday. She keeps it down ok, but won't eat on her own. She just keeps getting weaker the vet said he didn't think she'd live past last weekend yet she's still here. I don't want to put her to sleep without knowing why. I'm thinking maybe a different vet? There has to be something I can do.
Anyone go through anything like this?

Hi maryscurios,
I am so sorry to hear about you kitty.
I am a total cat lover, but there are times you have to say goodbye, with no reason. it is as fact of life and Gods will. He may need another kitty in heaven!
Just think of the great 6 years you have had together!!
17 years is a very long time for a kitty, she may just be winding down
Sorry i dont have good news.
my 10 year old has been sick before to, but the doctor was able to fix him up, his kiddys were failing, but I have him on some special cat food and he seems to be doing good. he may be with us 6 more years, God willing.
I will pray for you!!

Hi maryscurios,
I too am sorry to hear about your kitty.

I'm an avid cat fan (have 14 myself) I live in the country on 3 acres of land, so I can have that many.

17 is a very ripe age for a kitty, and it could just be time to say goodbye. It's hard I know, but think of the quality of life kitty is having right now.
If you just can't bear to say goodbye, then try to keep maggie as comfortable as possible. Baby food (like gerber) is good for an aging cat, and KTC kitten formula given through a childs medicine dropper will help her stay a little stronger.
I'll be praying for you and your kitty companion.

Firstly Im sorry to hear of Maggie feeling so poorly and I will have her in my prayers tonight,
now this may seem very cold hearted and ruthless but in my opinion taking her to another Vet will only stress her and cost you more money
at 17 maybe its just her time? when my BooBoo got to that point (not eating) I just did my best to make his final days as stress/pain free I could, with lots of lovin and cuddles and when it came time for him to leave I had the knowledge I hadn't caused him more hurt.
what ever you decide Im sure it will be the best for both of you
blessings to you and Maggie

I think it would be easier to let go if she seemed like she was hurting. But she just
lays there doesn't even complain when I pick her up. If she would just eat.

Is it possible that there's something wrong with her sense of smell? Cats rely on smell for a lot, and if she can't smell the food, she may not even recognize it as food.
I'd definitely try another vet before giving up, especially if your current vet seems at all rushed or distracted or like he/she can't or won't devote full attention and effort to Maggie.
I have an elderly cat myself. She's 15 and has also been having stomach problems, but in her case it's vomiting. I think she's still got some years left in her, though. Anyway, best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I understand wanting to try everything in your power to make her well.
I had good advice once. The vet told me (when I asked when I would know when to put my dog to sleep)
Name 3 things your dog likes to do..be it eat ride in the car play ball etc
When your dog can not do at least one of these things anymore its time

You and your kitty are in my thoughts. I know how hard it is to lose a pet

If you can do anything for your kitty be there for her at the end

Me and my doggy Muffin send you our heart felt sympathies, and big hugs and cuddles cos we are sure you are missing those.
I know you are hurting so much as the moment as I have lost beloved trusted friends, and god help me when my Muffin passes on, but I will, like when I got her, after a reasonable time go back to the rescue centre and choose another trustful companian to give a home to, maybe it is something you can think of in the future
Love and hugs xxxxxx
