i'd like to build a website, but i don't have a clue how to do that, anyone has some advice? or want to help me? i DON'T want those selfduplicating sites, cause everybody has seen those.
thanks in advance.
cheese
i started at http://geocities.yahoo.com/

but i recommend using PageBuilder for all n00bies! that's the easiest!
http://geocities.yahoo.com/v/pb.html

i see lots of programs that are still using that free service. and it's really easy too. just pick what you want on the page, drag it to where you want it and hit save.

Is it really that easy? I tried at another free web site place and I couldn't figure it out. They cancelled my account cause I was inactive. LOL
cheese
geocites is totally easy! just remember to use the pagebuilder, or else you'll be stuck trying to figure out html, LOL

~cheesemmm
freeandeasy
Angelfire is real easy.

I remember my early website-building days, it drove me insane trying to figure out the easiest page builders.

Now I do my own HTML, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out php, cgi, and all that complicated stuff.

I'm sure I'll get the hang of it, I'm learning.
theraven
Angelfire is the one I couldn't figure out. LOL Have said before....I am ssoooooo computer illiterate!

summersun and theraven.. if you guys really want, i'll make you a site w/ all your info on it using geocites, then you can go in and change the password so i won't be able to gain access.

i wouldn't be getting any of your vital info, just your referral links and email address or whatever you want on that page

my fiance is starting a company where he'll be making REAL websites for people.. he's already got a few customers, but the site isn't up and running so i can't really plug it yet, LOL but he charges 'cause he's doing the professional ones  LOL

but geocities is free and real easy, (but i feel bad if you can't figure it out and i know everyone wants a site of their own! LOL)

ok, i'm done rambling!

~cheesemmm
theraven
That is ssssssoooooooo nice of you! Thank you! If I can't figure out geocites I will let you know. This is so sad. I have a college degree and most 10 year olds know more about a computer than I do! Maybe I need to go back a take a computer course or two.
cheese
are you calling me a 10yo?? LOL i'll have you know i'm at least TWICE that! hehehe, yeah.. i guess i am in the younger age group on this board. *shrugs* ya got to start out somewhere right?

~cheesemmm
theraven
No No No! Didn't mean you! LOL I was just using it as an example of how computer dumb I am.
cheese
haha, it's ok, i know  i knew a little about computers and internet, but living w/ my fiance has really tought me a lot. but i'm no where NEAR what he is, he's a master in my opinion. he used to use the internet when it was a black screen and green letters.. no graphics, really boring. about 10 years ago or so.

just keep at it and don't give up, it's fun so i'm always willing to learn new things!

~cheesemmm ai.gif
theraven
Lucky you! My fiance know less about this thing than I do! LOL My 8 year old son knows almost as much as I do, so I figure in a year or two he'll be my computer consultant.
Brenda@PJ
Cheesemmm! You are a GIRL!
Why did I assume you weren't?
Hm. Sorry about that.

There's also a page builder on www.expage.com
cheese
lmao!! well, i don't really go around proclaiming my sex LOL!! maybe if i made my website all pink and baby blue woulda helped, hehe. just kidding... for some reason i have that affect on people. i've gotten the same responce in other forums too brenda, LOL

~cheesemmm
Brenda@PJ
Nah, it's the name cheese=cheesy=guy look
cheese
lmao!! that reminds me of a story.. bare w/ me now, i'm in a rambling mood for some reason. my fiance has this best friend.. we don't get along AT ALL, i try.. i honestly try. they're both "computer geeks" and have been best friends since elementary school, ANYWAY.. my fiance, we'll call him m, sometimes uses the name taem when he plays games (it's backwards for 'meat') i don't know WHY, he just does.. anyway, since m's friend is always following m, his friend started calling himself cheese.

i didn't know this until about 2 weeks ago. it kidna bummed me out.. but i figured, i'm not named cheese because i'm following some meat-head around.. i'm named cheese 'cause it's good da*@it! LOL plus.. i have the mmm at the end (usually) so i'm different.. i' original, LOL

i get teased and there are always jokes cracked about the name, but i like it.. makes me stick out from the crowd. not a problem w/ me at all lololol

I also thought cheesemmm was a guy, because it sounds like a guy name.
But I've learned you can't always tell by the names at forums and chats.
I just hope dirty-minded people don't think my username sounds like a lady of ill-repute
cheesemmm, where did you get that great banner?
cheese
i made it in adobe.

Hi Summersun,

I was like you - completely baffled by HTML etc ( I'm well into my 4th decade so the computer age passed me by LOL).

A friend sent me this link which helped heaps.

http://courses.mindleaders.com/dpec/login....password=trybuy

I hope I'm allowed to post this link!!

It's fairly old but takes you through basic HTML and I found it terrific!! I can now make a page - nothing flashy but I can do it.

Linkopp.com also have free web space. If you host their banner on your site you get 20 megs with no advertising or pop-ups etc. They have a simple web page builder too. They also have links to other training and tools. Hope this helps

Regards
Marianne

Thanks guys and girls.
I'm working to make a page at geocities now, but i can't copy and paste links into it, so i have to type a lot!!
but hee it's better than nothing, and i have time on my hands so......
i'll just keep working..
thanks again for all reactions and if you have more helpfull hints, please go on and give them...

greetz summersun.

ps. i guess you all think i'm a girl, because of my name.... well sorry... i'm a boy...
cheese
actually, you can cut and paste. it's a little different though.. go to the words you wanted copied.. highlight them and hit ctrl+c, then go back into geocities where you're working on the page.. and bring up the clipboard which is right under the "links" and "addons" buttons.. then hit ctrl+v and it will be pasted. then you can use that to get url's into the links and words on the front page w/out having to type them all over again.

hope that helped

Heeeelp please. I decided to try to build a website to try to get more referrals as practice as my hubby & I would like to start an online biz.
Have you noticed that that some of the referral links have your email addy in them? I noticed this & I have ALOT of them this way. I'd like to know exactly how I can promote these sites without actually giving my email addy too? I definitely don't want to get even more spam than I'm getting now.
And yes, the site has a webpage builder, but can't figure out how to do what I'm wanting to do.
Thanks for your time and help in advance.
summersun
they will always see your email addy, but you can make it a little less obvious, just put the text you want on your page, then hyperlink this text to your reflink, there is a button above in your screen saying "link" just select your text and then click the button, the rest is easy.

Like many of you, I first started my web design life in GeoCities. Now, I use Dreamweaver UltraDev, and Adobe Photoshop for my site. Here are a few places that have free, useful resources:

about.com--lots of webmaster articles, from newbie to expert.

pagetutor.com--basic html, check out the color and font charts when making your page templates.

sitepoint.com--for more advanced designers, but the forums and articles are helpful to find out what to do and not to do if you want to create a professional looking site.

Just start, learn, and keep updating! After two years, I find I can still learn something new everyday. Currently, I am taking a class in Flash, and can't wait to debut that version.

Good luck to you all with your sites,

lofty

You can upload it to your site at Geocities. Or, go to Geocities to create a new page and just copy and paste all the HTML into the new page. Hope that helped!
summersun
I DID IT!!!!!
It's not the best website you'll ever see, but hey, it's my first and i think it's not that bad....
Thanks to everyone who has helped me.

there are lots of ways to get free templates for your site. Just go to google.com and type in free web templates or if you want something nice type in free flash templates.
