Hiya.

Didn't know where to post this, so I figured I'd try ChitChat. smile.gif

I'm going to get a new computer... eventually (2-3 months)...
But I need to configure it properly and I don't know where to do that.

Any techies out there that can give me some advice?
Where to go?
Who to ask?
Where to begin?

What I know I want:
~ partitioned dual hard drives so I don't have to dump everything in case I need to overwrite my OS.
~ mirroring (just as a precaution)
~ enough working RAM and memory so that I can run php, mysql... basically, a server on my 'puter so I can work on scripts/coding without being online.

What I think I want:
~ a flat panel monitor
~ DVD -/+RW and probably DVD-RAM so I can save data more easily
~ other extras that I don't think I have to list here... lol

I guess I'm just asking for someone to point me in a good direction...
I don't mind reflinks/afflinks as long as I can get exactly what I need at a decent price. (But don't post them in case you get into trouble... pm or email me.)

Thanks!

basically if you know what you want, most companies allow you to customize a computer to your specific needs

gateway.com and dell.com are the best companies out there in my opinion and they offer fair prices and a lot of options to get the kind of computer that you want

if you need a server-type computer, i suggest you get a little extra RAM and a fairly speedy processor (usually 128 mb ram is the default amount, maybe you should get anywhere from 256 to 512 mb ram and at least a 1.0 GHz processor would be just fine)

if you also use your computer for multimedia purposes, you should aim for a large hard drive, at least 128 mb video graphics card, a decent sound card, and at least 256 mb of ram

it really all depends on what you need the computer for. and like i said gateway and dell are very good on their customer service. you could probably talk to one of their representatives if you have any questions on what kind of computer you need to get your work done

i hope that helped smile.gif

Thanks, nikehooperguy

That did help... basically confirmed what I thought about what I needed.
A friend pointed me to pcclub.com. They seem to know what they're doing and they offer a bunch of rebates, too. Hmm...

Well, I'm just trollin' for info so I can do some research.
I'll check out dell and gateway, too.

Thanks! smile.gif

I agree with everything except I would personaly opt in for 1024 Ram. Sometimes that extra boost is needed and its really not that much more. smile.gif Hope you find exactly what you need.

Myst: Yup. I might just go all out... or at least leave room to upgrade. tongue.gif
Want to be able to zip through things.

Oh, and I'll IM you about the daily clicks. LOL! It's ridiculously low daily. blink.gif

justin082005: laugh.gif I've been thinking about this new 'puter for at least a year now... probably more! Can you tell I mull things over for a long time before I jump?

But when I jump, people won't know what hit 'em. biggrin.gif

g'luck in your search, too. I'll post anything fun I find.
