Funny thing....

My PTR computer has just gotten the dreaded Coolwebsearch homepage hijacker.

Its nearly impossible to get rid of.

It takes over your chosen homepage, and it directs you to a search page (ergo the name Coolwebsearch trojan). It is also attached with a popup.

There are numerous efforts out there to try to destroy this trojan, but so far all has failed.

The worst thing is.... I use this computer for PTR only. Nothing else.. Its an old 800mhz, so its pretty much not worth using for anything else.

Beware out there... do not catch this trojan.... Its irritating, and you cannot block it, delete it, or in any other way get rid of it.
Best try so far: CWshredder...... only lasts untill you have logged onto the internet about two or three times. And then it takes over again.

Use CWshredder and clear all your temporary internet files etc....Also did you get it from a site u visit daily?

Of course it's possible to get rid of it, but you shouldn't have got it in the first place...and as for not being able to block it - rubbish! You're a fool if you use Internet Explorer with PTR. Sort out your system's security - you only have yourself to blame for your ignorance. There's way too many people whingeing about viruses/trojans/malware on here. rolleyes.gif The only time I use IE is for one or two of those annoying awkward sites that only work properly with IE. For everything else I use Mozilla Firefox (Netscape clone) or Opera. Firefox is currently my default browser not that IE Please do not attempt to beat the word censor. Outlook Please do not attempt to beat the word censor Express is to be avoided too.

Obviously you do not need to use internet explorer to be a fool. You seem to do quite well without it.

I was going to ask why you would not have bothered to offer some constrructive advise to get rid of - or prevent the virus etc. but of course you wouldnt...
Not to fools who bring it on themselves and then whine about it.

Maybe now that you have computer use down pat...you can spend some time tuning up your social skills.

Buddah - I am sorry to hear you have gotten a trojan...They do cause a mess and thanks for trying to let others know.

You can still get Trojans and spyware with Firefox and Opera.

Though granted, not near as often cos they don't 'stick' so well to non-MS products.

No need to be rude to people about it though - I suppose we could all use *NIX, but there are major *NIX exploits out there now too.

And PTR is NOTORIOUS for spreading this stuff.

How can you say it's somebody's own fault? *They* aren't the ones filling web pages with malware.

It really irks me that this is such an ongoing problem and POs do not seem to have either the inclination or the time to even check for it. Not to mention the advertisers who are doing it.

Grrrr!

What are you, Mr. "know-it-all"? Try being nicer. Part of the gift of knowledge is knowing how to be humble about sharing it. dry.gif

I've been getting some kind of search enhancer from PTR on a daily basis. I finally tracked it to roings dot com and block them. I've never visit that page through a program so I'm guessing it was a pop up.

Masterluke - Wow. How very arrogant and downright rude of you. Not everyone is blessed with the gift of being able to troubleshoot computer problems. Not everyone is blessed with the knowledge that you so obviously choose not to share. And obviously not everyone is blessed with the gift of tact and courtesy. I take it your mother didn't teach you not to say anything at all if you don't have anything nice to say, right? And why the foul language? Masked or not it's unnecessary.

Buddah785 - Try booting your computer in safe mode. PM me if you need instructions on doing so. Run CWShredder and then manually delete temp files, temporary internet files, and cookies. Reboot in normal mode.

If you haven't already done so, I also suggest that you go to Microsoft's Windows Update page at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and apply all Critical Updates and Service Packs. You'll want to run a couple of good Spyware Scanners after you finish your online sessions and purge cookies and temporary internet files. I suggest SpyBot: Search and Destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=nl&page=home ) and Bazooka Spyware Scanner ( http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/ ). Keep in mind that you'll need to update the programs and your operating system regularly otherwise you'll continue having problems.

For PTR purposes it might not be a bad idea to use Mozilla or Opera. I use IE and haven't had problems since I've sinched up my security settings.

Hope you find this helpful.

I know how you feel.
I have a computer that I only use for traffic exchanges and it's plum crazy all the trash that gets installed on your system from them.
I run ad aware every couple hours cleaning all the garbage and so far it has been able to remove most of them.
