And disk drives. And a tape drive.

You can also use an emulator, like VICE.
And you can play SIDs (C64 music) too on a pc.

I had one when I was about 8, i think we still have it in the attic somewhere along with one game I think I burnt out, spy hunter lol that was the greatest game (back then)
All I can remember now was all the codes I'd put in just to change screen colors or put the hearts up or spades to make designs

It took like half the day just to put in all the codes just to do something as simple as now....how its all changed

It's an old Apple, looks like the one I had, but I don't remember what it was. We just called it the "Apple."
I had a TI994A, not a C64. Worked kinda the same way, hooked up to the TV to play games or write Basic programs.

I had an amstrad cpc464 too. For a few months it was the 'coolest'? pc around cos it had the tape drive integrated into the keyboard LOL
My fave games were a pinball game where you had to do tasks as you flipped the balls and a game called colony where you had to plant mushrooms and stuff and fix fences before the bugs ate your mushrooms.
I had to throw out the k/b and the (green) monitor as they were broken but I saved the games in case I can get a working one on ebay some day (or find an emulator) - would be great to take a trip down memory lane with those games.

LOL a walk down memory lane!
We had a commodore 64 - I had to share it with my two brothers, so didn't have as much time to play on it as I would have liked. My fave games were that International Hockey one and One on One. lol
I would have sold my soul for an Apple IIe, but I never did get one. Sigh.
I'm sure the C64 is still in my parent's attic lol. Next time I'm there, I'll have to make a search, remove years of dust and see if it still works!
Thanks for the memories!

If you do a google search you should be able to find some suppliers for old games - or ebay usually has a good selection in. I searched and found a great shop that had the old cpc464 games in still ?1.99 like they were 15 years ago! Ebay usually gets old consoles through it from time to time in varying conditions too.

We watched the cartoons: Transformers, Thundercats, GI Joe, Ducktales, Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, The Flintstones..
and then we played the games on the C64.

Oh there's one game I couldn't find back:
you had to build scyscrapers with pre-fab blocks hanging from helicopters,
and face natural disasters. (also multi-player)
Does anyone know the name?
Here's a decent MIDI version of a nice tune from a once popular game on the C64, Commando:
http://www.server64.com/musicdownload.asp?...ten.asp&Search=(MIDI and SID are very different, but sometimes a MIDI sounds better than the original SID from the C64. Unlike SIDs, MIDIs sound different on different computers, because people have different sound cards etc. now.)

We took one out of the cupboard, dusted it off, and hooked it up today.
And we played International Soccer (from a cartridge - no need to wait minutes for the game to load) on a TV, with two great digital joysticks (made in Holland; I'm not sure if they sold them in the US).

That's about all you need, LOL.
The CPU (1 MHz?), the motherboard, the RAM (64k), the sound chip (SID), the OS (BASIC).. it's all in there.
And it needs power. We have a power converter (we have at least 3 actually, LOL) specially made for the C64, with the logo on it. But a generic one will do just as well.
You can just hook it up to a tv like we did.
(Of course you could use more if you want to play games. Though you could program your own, we used to do that.)

Wow, not sure wether I had a Com64 or older version, but I recall that in order for us kids to play a game, we first had to type in lengthy lines of code, sometimes took hours just to play one game. I can't recall what one this one was called, but I like the gam where Meteor's would fly all over the place and you would be right in the middle of this and when you would shoot these meteor's they would split into smaller ones, I would just sit in the middle of the screen and spin my ship around while shooting

Sound like an Asteroids clone.
Maybe Blasteroids.
| QUOTE |
The object of the game is to shoot all the asteroids and enemy ships. Complete the required number of levels, and you will face a giant guardian that you can only kill by shooting off all its body parts. The asteroids come in different colors and some have to be shot many time before they break up into smaller pieces and finally disintegrate. You can switch between 3 different ships, each with its own strengths and weaknessess, usually involving tradeoffs between speed and firepower. You can always choose between the 3 ships to suit your needs. Some asteroids when shot at will release powerup icons, which typically give you either more firepower or shields. A nice touch to this game is that 2 players can play at the same time on the screen (i.e. hotseat mode). This works well and adds a little to an otherwise average game. |
or if they only came scrolling down from above, then it was probably one of many Space Invaders clones

Chances are you can either download a PC version of Giana Sisters,
or a C64 emulator + the C64 version.
Google will help.
edited: I tried a search for "download giana sisters" and I think the first hit (out of 31) works:

http://hem.passagen.se/c64linus/top_ten.htmlAnd I think I have some links if you can't find it.
These are 3 good emulators:
"VICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator) is a great C64 emulator that also emulates other Commodore machines like the VIC-20, C128, and PET."
http://www.viceteam.org/CCS64 which you can get at CCS homepage:
http://www.computerbrains.com/Come Back 64
"A solid multiplatform C64 emulator. Java and Windows CE versions are also available."
Alex,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I went to check my old 64 games, they're in the back of our dressing room (hard to get actually lol), and in the same bad the games are I found my curlers and old postcards and letters my relatives have sended each others in the beginning of 1900's, both of those things (curlers and the letters) I've been searching for ever since we moved! I was so sure they'd be lost forever! And now because of this thread I went for the bag and found them!!!

P.S. Oh and I'm also playing Giana Sisters again

I still have mine, or well the pieces of it. My mom bought me one when I was 8 or 9 to play with for about $5 at a yard sale and I took it apart a few weeks later.
It was fun, but I didn't like the putting it back together part. Heh, I did get it to work though

I think I'm going to see if I still have all the parts tommorrow, I think my Commodore is still in the attic, unless mother had given it off to the Good Will like she had alot of my old toys and clothes..
Ghost Busters was my favorite game. Heh, I think I had some odd Spiderman like game too, can't really remember.

Some of my favorite games...
Jeopardy
Wheel of Fortune
Force Seven- sort of like an "Alien" type game.
Spy Hunter- didn't have that one very long.
Also had some sort of flight simulator game.
Also had a helicopter flight simulator, but never could figure out how to take off.
I'm pretty sure I had a Dungeons and Dragons game too.
Commando- pretty fun!

Yes it's a bit of nostalgy when you remind those old 8 or 16-bit computers.
I didn't have C64 but had a Slovak ZX-Spectrum clone called Didaktik Kompakt and although it had many flaws of old Speccy it had a built-in disc-drive.
But what is the most important I enjoyed very nice times with this old computer.
