USE COMPUTERS? GET CONNECTED WITH SAM?
Beginning July 1, Norfolk Public Library's public computers will be managed by SAM
(Smart Access Manager).
You will need your library card and Pin to access these features.
* Use and reserve a Pc Online, making sign up sheets obsolete.
* Begin your computer session when you type in your library card number, ensuring you a full session regardless of when you begin using the computer.
* Manager and pay for your printing. SAM will notify you of how many pages are sheduled for printing. You will have the option of canceling print jobs or modifying them so that you print only Those pages you wish to keep. To pay for printing you will have to make a non-refunadable deposit into a SAM account. What does it mean limited time for you to use the internet?
What happen if the computer station empty? Will I be able to use the internet. I have to enter my SAM ACCOUNT password.

please help what does this mean? What is going to happen?

not a very happy with these new library computer policy

I guess I have to walk 3 different library branch location everyday. If this thing work??
to get more time in the library.
I done it before
It doesn't say how long one session can last so me thinks it would be best to walk to the counter and ask one of the librariens what those changes really mean for you as a user

Doesn't sound all too bad imho

DBugs, it is not so bad, except the time limit. My local library uses something like this now, and you get logged off after acertain amount of time. If there is no one waiting to use the computers then you can log back in. The time limit at my library has always been 30 minutes, which kinda stinks, hopefully it is more than that at your library.

The main reason changes.
The Library going to add Filters on the computer. Since Children can go to adult sites without a problem.
I seen 7-9 yrs old in the library were going to Adult websites without blocking them.
Nude Adult picture. Im not lying. I seen it several time.
The adult have an option to ask for Filter to turn off.

How is it invading your privacy? When I'm at school I have to put in a username and password too, what's the difference? When a store demands photo ID when you want to pay them with a check, do you consider that invading your privacy too?

If there is a plasma center near you (you can look in the phone book), you can donate plasma (just the liquid part of your blood - no blood cells) twice a week. You must be healthy and not drink alcohol the day before or the day of your donation. The plasma centers I'm familiar with will pay you about $10 - $15 for your first donation, about $20 - $25 for your second donation, and then about $10 - $15 for every donation after that. So, if you donated twice a week every week, you could make, on average, about $20 - $30 a week, usually paid in cash immediately after you donate. It's time-intensive (takes about an hour and a half to donate each time) and sometimes you have to wait in line for a while if they are very busy. It's a wonderful thing to do, and you get paid for it. Most of the centers will have TV to watch while donating, or VCR's/DVD Players with movies on. They provide you with juice and cookies afterward. Plasma is often used to increase the blood volume of a patient in serious condition from blood loss, and plasma is also given to burn victims to keep them alive.
I've never donated for money, but I know about the above from my career. I work for a company that writes software used by these plasma centers and also for blood centers and hospitals.
I don't know of any blood centers (like LifeSource or the Red Cross donation sites or any smaller community blood centers in the U.S.A.) that pay for donations of whole blood (the liquid part plus the red and white blood cells). This is a much quicker process - you can usually be in and out in 30 - 45 minutes. It's still a wonderful thing to donate whole blood, and you can donate about every 50 days or so (some centers have different rules)... think about it, you can save a life!

David, make sure you read over their new policy carefully. They may not allow you to use their computers to make money in any way.
My college came down on the students last year because of some sites that were created. (I don't remember exactly what they were, but they were profit sites of some sort.) Although they were up long before the students came back to school, the IT department disabled the entire campus's connections until the students agreed to take down the sites. It's buried in their IT policy that their networks are not to be used for profit in any way, shape, or form.
I doubt a public library would really dig that deep, but just to be on the safe side, check it out.

I read this whole thread. David I can sympathise that you dont have your own computer. One day you will. But really you need to ask the librarian what the new policy is going to mean time wise for you. Also I would like to say that if you arent paying for the service you really shouldnt complain about it. Free is free...they have to change and fix their policies to accomodate all users. Everyone who has a library card should be able to use the computers.
