Elections will happen soon in different countries accross the world

And troubles will be back

In France, during the last election, Mr Le Pen representing a Muppet parti reach the scund turn of the election

HOW blink.gif , just because the french didn't go the vote offices

In USA, they had to re count the votes, what should normally never ha to happen. Those election was a real jokes at the Foreigners eyes

In both countries, the vote is not an obligation, just a right

BUT it's not logic, the givt is supposed to represent the population, with all their opinions, expecations, wills. How could it be if only 1/4 of this population voted?

Don't you think it could be better if everybody were obliged to vote? Even if you don't like politics, just vote blanks, at least it would represnet your opinions and show to politicians how you don't trust them. Don't forget that your Grand fathers fighted for this right. A lot of countries don't even allow population to expose their opinions

In Belgium, the vote is an obligation, (and don't say Communist country as I heard this morning in a chatroom, we don't have even a communist parti), that way we are sure that the elected people really represent the entire population

What's your opinion? a right, a moral obligation, a legal obligation?

It is a Civic Duty to me, I always make it to the polls for major elections-even if to vote "none of the above."

I should be better and make it to more of the smaller elections, I think that the local politicians effect my life, and can help me more. I just usually haven't paid any attention to who is running and for what.

I'm in the US.

I think it is both a right and an obligation. I'm in the US, and just can't fathom why people don't take voting more seriously.

Me either. I think the percentage is like 50% of the population that thinks their vote doesn't count, or they don't want to participate because they hate the government.

People don't understand that things can change if the good people that are running get enough votes, then maybe we can get on the right track. I am talking government in general, not about any particular politician (I tend toward the conservative side).

Here in Oz it is a right and an obligation to vote in Federal and State elections....I always make sure that I vote because I beleive if you don't vote then u have no rights what so ever to complain about the government that is voted in for the next four years....even though your preferred party may not have been elected at least you had your say...

Isn't there a fine if you don't vote. I thought I heard something to that effect.

Well, I think that since the people are reaping the benefits of this country (living in the US here), and this country provides a lot of stuff for them, it should be an obligation for them to vote.

Yup there is a fine for not voting in Federal and State level elections...however Local Council elections you don't have to vote and there is no fine for voting but again I still vote so that at least I know I have had my say in what is happening in my local area...

Good for you. I have to admit, I should be more aware of the local elections, but I'm not.

I'm from the US and I agree. It was really embarassing for our country and a setback for democracy that the Supreme Court had to decide the president.

I think voting is both a right and an obligation. You are obligated to have the right to vote.
Gray Eminence
To avoid unhappy people, to avoid the rec ount (if you know how many votes you have, you must have the right number of votes dry.gif ), to avoid the intervention of a court to decide who is the president dry.gif

Don't you think it would be better to make the votes mandatory ?
kezree
As I said before if you don't vote then you don't have a right to have a whinge and whine about the government.....
