Advertising.. people buying ads
Money that is used to pay members primarily comes from what is taken in thru ad sales......that's why you'll see so much talk about sustainable versus unsustainable ad prices around here.
To be successful for any length of time, a PTR has to continuously take in more money than it pays out. There just is no other way for it to happen. Many owners have additional sources of supplemental income (ex. search engines) and of course there is also money taken in when members upgrade --- but first and foremost are advertising sales.
This is why it's absolutely CRITICAL to choose which programs you join wisely. Don't be fooled by all the programs with high payouts that say they'll pay you 10 cents or 15 cents per email -- that's ludicrous......Programs that do that are underselling those ads horribly and are losing money with each email they send out. They can't possibly have the money available to pay their members!
Also avoid programs that try to lure you with big sign-up bonuses -- they're a big trouble sign because they put a program in debt before even the first ad goes out!
Remember - it doesn't matter how much your "earnings" page might say you've earned from a program; what really matters is whether or not you're actually going to be paid those earnings!

Do your homework on the praises and applause folder. Those programs are getting paid.

Ahh ... now I see. Thanks all. I'ma gonna try this out.
Beware of high payout programs, too many things can go wrong before cashout. Really check praises folder for names that appear again and again. Like the logans legacy group of sites (the owner has about 5) I thivk cash delight pays too.
