Here are the original challenge steps with answers.

1. First find the year that Abraham Lincoln was born. (1809)
2. Multiply that year by the number of letters in the most common first name among the Presidents. (James = 5 letters x 1809 = 9045)
3. Add to that result the number of full calendar years that FDR was President. (11 full calendar years + 9045 = 9056)
4. Subtract from that result the sequential number of the presidency that was served by a man who was never elected President or Vice President. (Gerald Ford = President #38. 9056 - 38 = 9018)
5. Divide that result by the number of letters in the last name of the President who served two terms, but not consecutively. (Cleveland = 9 letters. 9018 ? 9 = 1002)
6. Add to that result the number of persons who have served as President. (1002 + 42 = 1044)
7. Add to that result the sequential number of the presidency of the first President to have the same last name as a former President. (John Quincy Adams = President #6. 1044 + 6 = 1050)
8. Divide that result by the minimum age required to be President. (1050 ? 35 = 30)
9. Multiply that result by the number of Presidents whose formal first names begin with the letter "J". (John Adams, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John Tyler, James Polk, James Buchanan, James Garfield, John Calvin Coolidge, John Kennedy and James Carter = 11. 30 x 11 = 330)
10. Multiply that result by the number of Presidents whose formal first name begins with a vowel. (Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant = 4. 330 x 4 = 1320)
11. Add to that result the number of Presidents who had previously been Vice Presidents. (J. Adams, T. Jefferson, M. Van Buren, J. Tyler, M. Fillmore, A. Johnson, C. Arthur, T. Roosevelt, C. Coolidge, H. Truman, R. Nixon, L. Johnson, G. Ford and G. Bush = 14. 1320 + 14 = 1334)
12. Multiply that result by the number of Presidents who never had a Vice President serving with them at any time during their presidency. (J. Tyler, M. Fillmore, A. Johnson and C. Arthur = 4. 1334 x 4 = 5336)
13. Subtract from that result the number of Presidents who took office as a result of the death of a sitting President. (J. Tyler, M. Fillmore, A. Johnson, C. Arthur, T. Roosevelt, C. Coolidge, H. Truman and L. Johnson = 8. 5336 - 8 = 5328)
14. Add to that result the year of death of the President who served just one month. (William Henry Harrison d. 1841. 5328 + 1841 = 7169)
15. Multiply that result by the number of times the letter "O" appears in the combined first and last names of the first President to be awarded a Nobel Prize. (4 O's in Theodore Roosevelt. 7169 x 4 = 28676)
16. Divide that result by the number of Presidents who have been impeached. (A. Johnson and W. Clinton = 2. 28676 ? 2 = 14338)
17. Subtract from that result the number of former Presidents who were still living as of March 1, 2004. (Gerald Ford, James Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and William Clinton = 5. 14338 - 5 = 14333)
18. Add to that result the number of letters in the full name of the oldest man to be elected President. (18 letters in Ronald Wilson Reagan. 14333 + 18 = 14351)
19. Multiply that result by the number of Presidents who were assassinated. (Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John Kennedy = 4. 14351 x 4 = 57404)
20. Subtract from that result twice the number of Presidents who resigned from office. (Nixon = 1. 57404 - 1 x 2 = 57402)
21. Divide that result by the number of Presidents who had first ladies who were not their wives. (Jefferson - daughter, Jackson - niece, Van Buren - daughter-in-law, Harrison - daughter-in-law, Tyler - daughter-in-law, Taylor - daughter, Buchanan - niece, A. Johnson - daughter, Arthur - sister = 9. 57402 ? 9 = 6378)

I'm personally having a hard time beleaving 2 of those answers IPTL chose as 'correct ones'.....

9. Multiply that result by the number of Presidents whose formal first names begin with the letter "J". (John Adams, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John Tyler, James Polk, James Buchanan, James Garfield, John Calvin Coolidge, John Kennedy and James Carter

-How come no one saw that there was 11 instead of 10 and so many people checked the answers? Because atleast on the white house site there is only 10 listed wink.gif

11. Add to that result the number of Presidents who had previously been Vice Presidents. (J. Adams, T. Jefferson, M. Van Buren, J. Tyler, M. Fillmore, A. Johnson, C. Arthur, T. Roosevelt, C. Coolidge, H. Truman, R. Nixon, L. Johnson, G. Ford and G. Bush = 14.

-Hmmm wonder why an official site like the VicePresidents.com then sayes it's 17? dry.gif

What ever...... wink.gif

....it wasn't a very fair contest as far as I am concerned.....a lot of their contests are biased towards the USA ...even some of their quizes are...why not make their competitions more international orientated??? I did email them, very nicely suggesting this, but have had no reply....

I'm sorry I have very limited knowledge about past American Presidents but by the same token I could tell you every Australian Prime Minister all the way back to Federation....

Hehe, that's what Google is for. wink.gif You can search for the information online. And there's list of Presidents and VP in the US somewhere in the set of encyclopadia I've got... well, what I mean to say that it's not impossible to find such information when you have access to the world wide web.

Couldn't agree more!

How about some stuff about our (finnish) presidents once? tongue.gif

Anything from somewhere else for once than just U.S. would be a change!!! Maby they at IPTL don't know much about other countries? wink.gif

I had very good teachers while I was back in school so we actually did learn a lot about Australia too, lets see, from the back of my head I remember names like Edmund Barton (wasn't he the first?), Some Fisher, James Scullin and couple more but not complitely, ummm is the current one still John Winston Howard? smile.gif
