I think I may need someone to manage a pay to read site for me. I would prefer someone with experience of doing this, although preferably without too many other commitments. What sort of renumeration would I need to give?

It's typical for a manager to get 50% of the profits.

I`m interested of running a PTR site for you.
I`m online many hours a day and I`ve been couple of years in the PTR business.
I haven`t ran a PTR site before, but I have ran many other kinds of sites with forums, webshops, and things like that that require some time. And I?m very quick on learning things.
I also design sites and can code PHP + Mysql.

How do you determine what the profits are? Some revenues generated by the website may not be possible to track, as results may be generated from other sources. Also, would some sort of legal agreement be needed between website owner and manager?

Yes. What is PROFIT ?
If somebody can ask this question (regarding managing a PTR site, of course) I will give him my site and I will share with him 50% from those PROFITS...

A good manager tries to get the site into profit.
Giving them 50% is a good motivator to work hard at it.
(And yes, it really can be done, you can make a profit. Just don't count on making enough to live on).

You have to make an effort to keep revenue sources separate.
My managers signup for webmaster affiliate programs in their own names, so each site can be tracked.
(Some affiliate programs allow you to track sites separately).
