Ok guys, I really need some help. I am in the process of reinstalling windows 98. I started with gateway
system restoration CD and then inserted microsoft 98 CD when told to. Now the reloading has stopped
and this message as appeared.

SCANREG

The following file is missiing or corrupted: c:\windows\DBLBUFF-SYS

Also this file: c:windows\IFSHLP.SYS

cannot find win.com, unable to continue loading windows.

Then this appears :\>

Now I figure I must type something in that space next to the > but I have no adea what that is.

Is there anyone out there that could help me, I need to get back to my PTR'S biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone.......Candi rolleyes.gif

What happen to your Computer? How fast is your computer and your hard drive.

Did you do some computer backup
lucyfer
looks to me like you type SCANREG
then hit enter

which would be scan registry ??

Candi
I do not know what happened to the computer, I just started it up and it told me that it could not find some
file and then told me to reinstall windows. I must have messed up something. I did try to type in
:\>SCANREG and then hit enter and it said that it was a bad command

I did do a backup when I first got the computer and I tried using that. This is what happens with that
one

It says the diagnostic tools were seccessfully loaded to drive D, then this appears :\> Do not
know what to do next.
lucyfer
found this:

QUOTE
"Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose 'Command prompt only' and run ScanReg."

So do it! Choose 'Command prompt only' and press ENTER. Type SCANREG/RESTORE at the DOS prompt, press ENTER, and ScanReg will start up, showing the different backups available. Highlight the most recent backup and press the 'R' key on your keyboard.

Reboot.

In Windows 98, ScanReg is a fairly good program that works well. Try it out!

Candi did you run The SpyBotz or Adware make sure is your computer is very clean.

How big is your hard drive.

Candi It time for you to buy new computer for next year. You can buy new computer around 300-700 bucks. Plus they going to have at least cd burner and a huge hard drive. You might have at least 256mb ddr ram or 512 ddr ram.
Candi

Thanks Lucyfer, I will try that.

davidbugs I did run the spybot a few days before the computer messed up. I think the ram is 64, does
that sound right, the computer is 4 years old, and I think that you are right about the new computer. I
bought the computer just for having fun, then I go into this PTR craze, so do need more room. I will
see if I can fix mine for the moment and then start to shop around for a new one, sounds like a good
way to spend my tax refund check. biggrin.gif

Thanks for your help, you guys are awesome
lucyfer

64megs is awfully low. A new computer would be a good idea. If you need any help I'm always here.
Candi
I am on my fathers computer so I am going home to try and get mine up and
running. I will let you guys know when I am back on line with mine, but have no
fear I shall be back if I have any trouble, I only live next door to my Dad.
lucyfer
keep us posted!!
Candi
Well, I typed in SCANREG/RESTORE and it tells me that it is a bad command or file name.
I really messed up my computer this time. Whenever start my computer now it just
goes to the original warning messeage. I can do nothing with it. Should I call in a
repair man, it would be nice to get it going even if I decide to buy a new one. Of course
I can not be without a computer for long, need to log into my PTR sites. Woo is me sad.gif

Go to a store that sells computer stuff (you got Fry's electronics close to you?) and purchase extra ram memory to your computer, that'll help you until you can get a new one, I just bought some to my friends computer while we were in LA and 128 ram was only around 45$ at Fry's.

Now about the problem you have, when you start your computer can you get to the state (sorry english isn't my main language but I try to explain) where you can fix things, troubleshoot but not fully use your computer like access internet? It should be called something like troubleshoot mode unsure.gif The time when you can access it is somewhere halfway during the opening prosess of the computer. you need to press I think F4 or F5 to get there.

I've got a computer wizz here with me and I can always try to ask him for support,

Lots of luck with the puter and I'll be here if you need us! smile.gif

Before you do anything else. You should go here if you can get to it sign up and ask the tech guys what to do. http://forums.techguy.org/index.php?s=
they should be able to help you. They have helped me several times. Usually quick responeses too. Hope you get everything working good again. good luck

safe mode

usually tap F8 as your computer boots up wink.gif

have you re-formatted your hard drive?

last resort, but works 99% of the time wink.gif
bobo
You can fomat you computer. Then install WIN98 again.
arwld
I agree with bobo.

Usually U can get to dos mode before windows tries to boot, there are a few ways to do it.
you can put in your Windows CD, then you type in the letter of your cdrom and
example
d:\setup
that should get you to where Windows will do the rest.
It may ask you if you want to fix the problem or erase and start over.
If you have any more problems let me know and i'll get my old gateway out and figure out how I did it.
Seem like the same thing happened to me once and I had done something to the network configuration or the startup list (deleted something) and windows had a fit.
took forever to undo it, because i removed a bunch of files at once.
Hope this helps
tigika
My suspection is that you got a virus somehow and messed up the entire windows system by rewriting msdos.sys (the heart file of windows 98).

And my further suspection is when you tried to reinstall the windows, there are some bad clusters on the harddrive which are not marked therefore your computer never knew about and wrote the files (DBLBUFF-SYS, and ifshlp.sys) in those bad clusters which would be unreadable, hence your problem.

So far the fix I can think of is to do a scandisk.

I believe when you put in the CD (win98) you can boot the computer directly to the dos command then type in:

(when Z is the cdrom letter)

Z:\scandisk

it should run the scandisk and choose the option to run FULL SCAN.

that way it will inspect the clusters and mark them bad when found. Then installing windows shouldn't be a problem afterwards.

But then it's only my suspection. Gotta try it out and see.
Candi
Hi guys, computer still messed up but I will try your ideas. I think you are right about deleting some
files that I should not have. The computer does tell me that I have an operating windows system
installed on it, it just will not start. When I turn the computer on, the Gateway logo comes up, then
a flash of the windows logo and then the error messages that I mentioned. It always goes to the
command prompt only. So I guess that means I must tell it what to do. How do I know what the cd-rom
letter is? I am now going to the website that bbyboop1977 . Will keep you all posted on my progress.
At least I am learning a lot of new stuff wink.gif

Thanks everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!
