Sorry to be the spoilsport here - but I do have a complaint - the lack of earnings
I have been a member of NBE for more than 3 months now, and my earnings is $0.5628. At this rate it is going to take me 2 years to reach the $5 payout. I have no doubt at all that the WM is honest and will pay me when I do reach it, but do I want to wait until 2006 for $5?
I redeemed for banner impressions a few days ago (and they were up in minutes after redeeming) and as soon as they expire I am going to quit.

Here I am. I've haven't been able to access this forum much, seems like when I'm available, it's not- and when it's not, I am.
Few things to address here...
Upgraded Nickel Ads... too many in one email = yes, and that's why I had cut down the mini-random nickels to a max of 10 when I was doing that. For those of you who don't know, I'm a graduate student working on my PhD and I try to do work on NBE in the evenings. It's a ... distraction ... from all the hard thinking I do during the day. Well, this week is a particularly busy week because the project I'm working on for school involves software development and the next version is due, well, January 2. That, with family holiday travel means I have less time for NBE. Sorry about that, January will be great.
Slow earnings. Actually, I gotta agree, they are slow. First of all, it's all about advertising money coming IN to the site - when that doesn't happen, then I can't send anything but my own stuff and people get tired of hearing from me and it reaches a point of diminishing returns anyway. I'm working at getting new advertisers, but DO need to spend more time on just that. Second, I try to provide lots of different earning opportunities, and everyone is right here - if you aren't doing the PTCs or start page (or the ad grid, getting referrals, pay-to-perform, etc.), you're missing out on some potential. Not everything is for everyone, though, and my hope is IF you're ONLY doing the emails that you are at least spending less time RELATIVE to how much you are earning. It may take you longer to get to payout, but you'll actually spend less time doing it. (1/2 cent minimum means 1000 clicks to payout, and I send a lot of 1 cent solos, so it's much less than 1000 clicks if you want to go the low-effort route.)
In summary, here are the ways to earn at NickelsByEmail:
1. 5 Cent Earning Opportunities in Every Paid Email!
2. Paid-to-Read Emails (1/2 cent minimum per standard link)
3. Targeted Search Emails (for limited countries)

I like the order as is. Kinda like gimme mail that puts the 5 point ad link on top, before the paid links in the body.

I just joined this site today and I have a few questions about the start page. Okay I see the point links at the bottom of the page. Do I understand correctly that the points earned in this area convert to cash that is converted weekly?
What are the 29 banner links at the top of the page for? Do they earn me anything?

I think the earning rate is fine, I joined a couple of months ago and made payout without any referals. I am half-way to payout again thanks to the pay to perform section.
I do the search mails which do significantly speed up the earnings. I don't particularly like searches but they have good earning potential at NBE, unlike some other sites I won't name.
And NBE PAYS. QUICKLY. Novel concept.

I just signed up for So Red The Rose a day and a half go, and already have $.48. The first morning I had 50 emails with a lot that expired. That was back in December of LAST year that NBE was doing that... the built-in start page is "broken" in CC scripts (as of the last time I checked) and doesn't quite credit everyone the same. This eventually led into the affiliate program, somewhat as an alternative to that method of earning. Instead, the start page contest turned soley into a click contest.
Let's just say a few of those "ways to earn" are out-of-date... it has been a year, after all!

Actually, this was the only other thing listed that really changed - I couldn't sustain 1 cent daily, not when there aren't enough things worth promoting continuously. The start page and affiliate PTCs make up for that, at least in part.
I'll be happy to talk about any of these things further in the NBE support folder!
